New startups like Slate Truck and Telo Trucks are already targeting this market with models that combine utility, affordability, and customization—often at price points well below those of the Cybertruck. Slate’s offering, for instance, is projected to start under $28,000, and is focused on simplicity, modularity, and ease of urban use.

The presence of these upstarts—and their backers, which include prominent investors like Jeff Bezos—has heightened the pressure on Tesla to act quickly. Many industry analysts believe that if Tesla had prioritized a compact, affordable pickup ahead of the Cybertruck, it could have captured a far larger slice of the global EV market.


The Road Ahead: Opportunities and Challenges

Technical and Regulatory Hurdles

While the idea of a smaller Tesla pickup is promising, execution will be everything.
