A shocking diplomatic incident unfolded at Shanghai’s international airport, where an Indian national of Arunachal Pradesh origin was reportedly detained, harassed, and subjected to an 18-hour ordeal after Chinese officials declared her Indian passport invalid. The rationale given by the officials was a direct assertion of China’s territorial claim over the Indian state, telling the woman that “Arunachal is part of China.”
The Nightmare Transit
The woman, identified as Pema, was transiting through Shanghai on an onward journey to Japan. Her planned transit time was just three hours, but it quickly escalated into a prolonged detention. She had already passed the initial immigration gates and was queuing for the security check when the incident began.
Pema recounted that an official abruptly approached her, loudly calling out “India, India” along with her name, and singled her out from the queue. When she questioned the reason for being detained, the official’s response was blunt and politically charged.
“Arunachal not valid passport not valid,” the official reportedly stated, setting the stage for the dramatic confrontation.
A Passport Declared Invalid
The core of the harassment revolved around her birthplace. According to Pema, the Chinese official used a translation tool to deliver a definitive political statement: “Arunachal is part of China. Your passport is invalid.”. This was the explicit justification for refusing her transit and detaining her near the China Eastern transfer desk.
This action—the rejection of an official Indian travel document by declaring it “invalid” based on a contested territorial claim—marks a significant escalation in the bureaucratic harassment faced by Indian citizens from the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh in China. For years, China has occasionally issued stapled visas on a separate sheet of paper to residents of the state, implying they are not regular citizens of India, but this outright declaration of an Indian passport as invalid is a rare and aggressive move.
Pema’s Legal Stand and Embassy Intervention
Throughout the ordeal, Pema attempted to reason with the officials, challenging their legal basis for the detention. “I said by law I don’t know what you’re saying because Arunachal is part of India. I’ve never heard of Arunachal being part of China,” she asserted, questioning the officials’ authority and requesting to see the specific rule that prohibited Indians from transiting. She emphasized that Indians in Arunachal Pradesh have no land property rights or access to public funds in China, as their government is distinctly Indian.
Despite her reasoned arguments, the officials remained unyielding, repeating the mantra: “India no China only Arunachal China only”.
The prolonged detention, mocking, and abuse only ceased after the situation was escalated to the highest diplomatic levels. The Indian Embassy in China reportedly intervened and took swift action, ultimately leading to Pema’s rescue and the end of her 18-hour airport nightmare.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the geopolitical tensions simmering between India and China, with officials at a major international hub like Shanghai airport using administrative powers to enforce unilateral territorial claims, leading to the harassment of an innocent traveler.
