Young Champions from Meghalaya: How Two Kids Dominated the Northeast Muay Thai Championship

In the hills of Meghalaya, a small MMA gym is proving that age is no barrier to excellence in combat sports. Two remarkably young fighters—Ixen Kushar, aged 6, and Sam Bar Lingo Maang, aged 7—recently claimed titles at the Northeast K1 and Muay Thai Championship held in Tripura, stunning opponents and spectators alike with their skill and determination.

The duo trains at Ro Combat Fitness, a modest gym founded in 2022 by coach Babit Kharsahnoh (also known as Babit Kasano). What started as a small initiative has quickly become a nurturing ground for aspiring martial artists in the region. Kharsahnoh, a seasoned fighter himself, emphasizes values beyond the ring: discipline, respect, control, resilience, and character building. “We’re not teaching aggression,” he explains in interviews. “We’re creating good human beings.”

The young champions’ success is a testament to this philosophy. Their parents echo the sentiment, viewing Muay Thai not as a path to violence but as a way to instill strength, confidence, and positive traits in their children. The kids themselves, despite their tender age, display a maturity and focus that belies their years, speaking confidently about their training and victories.

Ro Combat Fitness stands out for its inclusivity, welcoming children, women, and adults equally. The gym fosters a supportive community where martial arts serve as a tool for personal growth and dreaming big.

Adding depth to the story is Rishan, an older fighter at the gym who embodies pure grit. Facing personal challenges, including caring for a sick mother and training without sponsors, Rishan is set to represent the region at an international event in Cambodia this February. His journey highlights the raw determination that drives many at the gym.

This heartwarming tale from Meghalaya showcases how martial arts can transform lives in underserved communities. From humble beginnings, Ro Combat Fitness is inspiring a new generation, proving that with the right mentorship, even the youngest can achieve greatness while upholding strong values.
