Guwahati, January 8, 2026 – Football enthusiasts in Assam and the Northeast region are gearing up for a landmark event as the original FIFA World Cup Trophy makes its historic first visit to the state on January 13, 2026. This marks the trophy’s debut not only in Assam but in the entire Northeast, placing the region on the global football map ahead of the expanded FIFA World Cup 2026, co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
The visit is part of the prestigious FIFA World Cup Trophy Tour by Coca-Cola, a global journey that kicked off on January 3, 2026, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The tour will span 30 FIFA member associations, with over 75 stops and more than 150 days, aiming to celebrate football’s legacy while inspiring communities worldwide.
In India, the trophy’s return after a 12-year hiatus begins in New Delhi before heading to Guwahati. Assam Sports and Youth Welfare Minister Nandita Gorlosa announced the details, emphasising the significance of the event. “This has never happened here before. For the Northeast, this is a first,” she stated, highlighting strict adherence to FIFA protocols, including security measures and the trophy’s designated “resting time.”
The trophy is scheduled to arrive in Guwahati around 10 a.m. on January 13. It will be transported directly to the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium (commonly known as Barsapara Stadium), where public viewing will commence from 3 p.m. with free entry for fans. The official inauguration ceremony is set for approximately 8:30 p.m., to be graced by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. The welcome will feature traditional Assamese cultural performances alongside Indian elements, blending local heritage with the global spectacle.
The event is expected to draw massive crowds, inspiring young footballers and boosting grassroots interest in the sport across the region. Officials note that the Guwahati showcase coincides with local festivities, further enhancing the celebratory atmosphere.
This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity allows fans to stand before football’s most iconic symbol – the solid gold trophy lifted by champions since 1974. As the countdown to the biggest FIFA World Cup ever continues, Assam’s inclusion in the tour underscores the state’s rising prominence in Indian sports. Football fans are advised to stay updated on official channels for any crowd management guidelines to ensure a smooth experience.
