NEC Releases Rs 13.45 Crore to Boost Development Projects in Meghalaya

Shillong, January 10, 2026 — In a significant step towards accelerating growth and infrastructure development in Meghalaya, the North Eastern Council (NEC) has released Rs 13.45 crore (precisely Rs 13,45,38,500) for a diverse range of key projects. The funds, disbursed in December 2025, were announced in recent updates and focus on enhancing tourism, preserving cultural heritage, improving connectivity, upgrading education facilities, and supporting local livelihoods.

This allocation is part of a larger NEC disbursement of Rs 76.78 crore across the Northeastern states and various regional agencies during December 2025. The initiative underscores the council’s ongoing commitment to balanced regional development, livelihood generation, cultural promotion, and innovation in the Northeast.

Major Projects Funded in Meghalaya

The released funds will support several high-impact initiatives across the state:

  • Tourism Infrastructure: Construction of tourism-related facilities at Laitlyngkot (Lamlyer) in the East Khasi Hills district, aimed at promoting sustainable tourism and attracting visitors to the region’s natural attractions.
  • Cultural Preservation: Development of a cultural complex for Seng Khasi Ri Raid Laban at Lum Shat Sngi, Kenches Trace, in Shillong. This project seeks to safeguard and promote indigenous Khasi heritage and traditions.
  • Market and Livelihood Support: Construction of an RCC G+4 commercial building at Iewdak Laban Municipal Market. The facility will enable the sale of local products, including agriculture, horticulture, handicrafts, piggery, and floriculture items, thereby boosting economic opportunities for farmers and artisans.
  • Education Infrastructure: Construction of school buildings at multiple locations, including Rama Krishna Mission (RKM) schools in Laidiengsai, Mawrah, Laitryngew, Wahlong, Pynursla, Pomsohmen, and Nongkynrih. These upgrades will improve access to quality education in rural and underserved areas.
  • Urban and Sanitation Improvements: Enhancement of solid waste management systems and associated infrastructure along the main approach road to Iewduh market in Shillong, contributing to cleaner and more organized urban spaces.

In addition, Rs 3 crore has been allocated under the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (NESIDS – Roads) for road improvement works. This includes upgrades to the Shillong City to Umroi Airport road, which is expected to significantly enhance connectivity and benefit approximately 10 villages with a combined population of around 7,287 people.

Complementary Initiative: Model Handloom Production Centre

Separately, the NEC completed the establishment of a Model Handloom Production Centre at Marngar in the Ri-Bhoi district during December 2025, at a cost of Rs 1.43 crore. Implemented under the Industries sector, this centre aims to revive traditional handloom practices, provide skill enhancement opportunities (especially for women weavers), improve product quality and diversification, and strengthen the market competitiveness of Meghalaya’s handloom products. It represents a vital effort to promote sustainable livelihoods and preserve indigenous weaving traditions.

The NEC’s December 2025 releases also included Rs 26.47 crore for various regional and non-project activities across the Northeast, covering areas such as agriculture, cultural exchanges, youth programs, environmental studies, and technological advancements.

These investments reflect the central government’s continued focus on inclusive and sustainable development in the Northeastern region. For the most up-to-date details, residents and stakeholders are encouraged to refer to official NEC announcements or Meghalaya government sources.
