North-East India Dominates Year-End Travel Trends: Darjeeling Leads the Way in 2025

As 2026 begins, fresh insights from late 2025 continue to highlight a significant shift in India’s domestic tourism landscape. According to data released by the digital travel platform Agoda, India’s North-East region emerged as a major favorite for year-end getaways during the October-to-December 2025 period.

The findings are based on accommodation searches conducted by Indian users on Agoda between July and September 2025, reflecting planning trends for the peak holiday season. Travelers increasingly sought out cooler climates, misty hills, serene natural landscapes, and a respite from urban crowds, turning eastward in large numbers.

Darjeeling, the iconic “Queen of the Hills” in West Bengal, claimed the top spot as the most searched destination in the North-East. Renowned for its sprawling tea gardens, breathtaking panoramic views of the Kanchenjunga mountain range, colonial-era charm, and peaceful ambiance, Darjeeling captivated domestic travelers looking for a quintessential winter escape.

Following closely in second place was Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, celebrated for its stunning Himalayan vistas, vibrant Buddhist culture, and adventure opportunities. In third position came Shillong, Meghalaya’s capital, often dubbed the “Scotland of the East” for its rolling hills, lively music scene, cascading waterfalls, and misty, refreshing atmosphere.

Other notable destinations in the rankings included Guwahati (Assam) and Siliguri (West Bengal), which ranked fourth and fifth, respectively. These cities serve as vital gateways to the region, with Guwahati offering urban energy and cultural vibrancy, and Siliguri providing convenient access to multiple hill stations and neighboring countries.

The trend extended beyond these established favorites, with growing interest in quieter, offbeat locations such as Cherrapunji (Meghalaya), famous for its lush greenery and dramatic waterfalls; Pelling (Sikkim), offering spectacular Kanchenjunga views; and Kalimpong (West Bengal), known for its colonial architecture, flower markets, and tranquil setting.

This surge underscores a broader evolution in domestic travel preferences. Indian travelers in 2025 increasingly favored nature-centric, less crowded holidays that emphasize authentic experiences, cultural immersion, and natural beauty. Improved connectivity, greater awareness through digital platforms, and a desire for serene, rejuvenating escapes have propelled the North-East from a niche choice to a mainstream destination.

Commenting on the data, Gaurav Malik, Country Director for the Indian Subcontinent and Indian Ocean Islands at Agoda, noted the positive momentum: “It’s great to witness travellers embracing the diverse landscapes of India, in this case the North-East. The region’s natural beauty and serenity captivate those seeking both popular and quaint experiences.”

The rise has also encouraged more accommodation providers—ranging from hotels and homestays to villas and serviced apartments—to partner with platforms like Agoda, enhancing options for visitors and supporting sustainable tourism growth across the region.

As the North-East continues to gain prominence, its blend of iconic hill stations, emerging hidden gems, and rich cultural offerings positions it as one of India’s most compelling choices for future holidays. Whether seeking tranquility amid tea estates or misty mountain adventures, the region delivered exactly what many travelers craved in the final months of 2025.
