Rising electricity demands and heat generation would cause the atmosphere to heat dramatically, transforming Earth into a “sizzling” or “gigantic ball of fire”—a runaway greenhouse effect reminiscent of Venus.

This vision stemmed from simple extrapolation: population and resource use growing exponentially cannot persist indefinitely without catastrophic consequences. Hawking emphasized that this was not inevitable but a probable outcome unless humanity drastically changes course. Recent discussions, including resurfaced reports from 2024–2025, have linked his ideas to ongoing climate concerns, with NASA acknowledging the validity of threats from global warming and resource depletion—though the agency has never endorsed the specific 2600 timeline.

Artificial Intelligence: The Greatest Threat to Humanity

Hawking was particularly alarmed by the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI). In a widely quoted 2014 BBC interview, he warned: “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” He explained that once AI reaches a certain level, it could redesign itself at an accelerating pace, outstripping human biological evolution. In earlier statements, he suggested a timeframe of 1,000 years or more, but by 2017 (in the BBC documentary Expedition New Earth), he shortened it dramatically: humanity has roughly 100 years to establish self-sustaining colonies on other planets, such as Mars or beyond.

He cited accumulating risks—climate change, nuclear war, pandemics, genetically engineered viruses, asteroid impacts, and overpopulation—that make staying confined to one world increasingly precarious. “Although the chance of a disaster to planet Earth in a given year may be quite low,” he noted, “it adds up over time, and becomes a near certainty in the next 1,000 or 10,000 years.” Spreading to the stars, he believed, was essential insurance against extinction.
