India’s Gen Z: Traveling Wherever the Music Takes Them

In a striking shift toward experience-driven travel, India’s Generation Z is increasingly letting live music guide their adventures. According to a recent Airbnb survey released in early January 2026, over 62% of Gen Z travelers in India plan to embark on trips specifically for concerts and music festivals this year. For this demographic, music isn’t just entertainment—it’s becoming a powerful gateway to discovering new destinations, both within the country and abroad.

The survey highlights how live events are reshaping travel priorities. Unlike previous generations who planned trips around holidays or long weekends, Gen Z often begins arrangements as soon as an event is announced, with more than one-third (36%) starting their planning immediately upon hearing about a concert or festival. This proactive approach underscores a broader cultural trend: prioritizing immersive, in-person experiences over traditional sightseeing.

One of the most compelling findings is the role of music in introducing young travelers to unfamiliar places. A significant 76% of respondents reported visiting a city for the first time solely because of a concert or music festival. These events act as entry points, drawing crowds to new neighborhoods, cultural districts, and local businesses such as cafes, nightlife spots, and eateries. More than half (53%) extend their stays beyond the event dates to explore further, deepening their engagement with the destination and boosting local economies.

Financially, these music-led journeys represent a meaningful investment. On average, respondents spent around ₹51,000 on their most recent event-based trip. Many are willing to allocate a substantial portion of their income—often 21-40% of their monthly earnings—to fund these experiences, viewing them as essential lifestyle choices rather than occasional luxuries.

The appeal extends beyond India’s borders. Over 40% of Gen Z travelers expressed openness to international trips for the right show, with popular destinations including the United States (48%), Asia (46%), and Europe (45%). This willingness reflects how global artists and festivals are fueling cross-border cultural exploration among young Indians.

Large-scale events are amplifying this trend. Festivals like Lollapalooza India, set to return to Mumbai’s Mahalaxmi Racecourse on January 24–25, 2026, exemplify the magnetic pull of live music. Attendees rave about the atmosphere, with 62% citing it as a reason to return and an impressive 98% expressing intent to attend future editions. Airbnb has even partnered with the festival to offer exclusive stays and fan-focused experiences, recognizing how such events align with the growing demand for group-friendly, memorable accommodations.

Remote and scenic gatherings also contribute to the phenomenon. Events held in stunning natural settings, such as the Ziro Festival in Arunachal Pradesh’s lush Ziro Valley, combine indie music with eco-friendly vibes, tribal culture, and breathtaking landscapes. These festivals not only showcase independent artists but also promote sustainable tourism and community involvement, appealing to Gen Z’s values.

Overall, this music-led travel wave signals a generational preference for authentic, shared moments over material possessions. As live events continue to influence where, when, and how young Indians explore the world, they are dispersing tourism more evenly, supporting local communities, and turning concerts into catalysts for lifelong memories. For India’s Gen Z, the beat is clear: when the music calls, they’re ready to hit the road.
