Meghalaya Football Association Launches Dedicated Academy to Boost Long-Term Player Development

Shillong, January 30, 2026 – In a significant step toward strengthening grassroots football in Meghalaya, the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has announced the launch of its own dedicated academy in Shillong.

The announcement, made on January 29, 2026, underscores the MFA’s ongoing commitment to nurturing young talent and building a robust football ecosystem in the state. The MFA Academy will prioritize structured training programs, focused long-term player development, and the establishment of a clear progression pathway. This will enable promising young footballers to advance from grassroots levels to state and national teams.

While Meghalaya already benefits from several club-run and private football academies, the introduction of an MFA-led academy is expected to provide greater centralization and coordination. It aims to streamline talent identification, training, and preparation specifically for higher-level competitions, including representation in state teams.

As part of the rollout, the MFA will hold open selection trials to scout and induct talented players. These trials are scheduled for February 6, 2026, at the MFA Turf, Third Ground, Polo, Shillong, commencing at 9:00 AM. The trials target boys born between 2013 and 2016.

The MFA, established in 1976 and affiliated with the All India Football Federation, has long been the governing body for football in Meghalaya. It promotes the sport across the state through initiatives like youth leagues, women’s football programs, and coach/referee development. The new academy represents a strategic expansion of these efforts amid growing infrastructure investments in Meghalaya football.

This development signals exciting prospects for the future of the sport in the region, offering young players a more structured route to realize their potential on larger stages. For further details, interested participants and supporters can refer to official announcements from the MFA or local sports media outlets.
