Acclaimed Filmmaker Mira Nair Named in Latest Jeffrey Epstein Document Release

Renowned Indian-origin filmmaker Mira Nair, celebrated for her groundbreaking contributions to cinema and as the only woman to secure an Oscar nomination for India, has been mentioned in a recent tranche of documents related to the late financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

The U.S. Department of Justice released a massive cache of over three million pages of records in late January 2026, as part of ongoing transparency efforts tied to investigations into Epstein’s activities. These files include emails, correspondence, and other materials previously part of federal disclosures.

Nair’s name appears in an email dated October 21, 2009, sent by prominent publicist Peggy Siegal to Jeffrey Epstein. The message describes an afterparty held at the Manhattan townhouse of Ghislaine Maxwell—Epstein’s associate, who was later convicted of sex trafficking—following events connected to Nair’s 2009 biographical film Amelia. The movie, starring Hilary Swank as aviator Amelia Earhart and Richard Gere, received a mixed reception according to the email, with the publicist noting it was “tepid” overall but more appreciated by women.

The email lists several high-profile attendees at the gathering, including former U.S. President Bill Clinton, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, and collector Jean Pigozzi, alongside Nair herself. It provides a casual recap of the evening, including unrelated observations about cast members at a separate promotional event.

Mira Nair is widely regarded as a trailblazer in Indian and global cinema. Her 1988 film Salaam Bombay! earned critical acclaim, winning a National Film Award in India and becoming the first Indian film to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film (now known as Best International Feature Film). This milestone made her the only woman to achieve such a nomination on behalf of India.

Nair is also the mother of Zohran Mamdani, the current Mayor of New York City.

Importantly, authorities and media reports have emphasized that inclusion in the Epstein documents does not imply any involvement in wrongdoing or criminal activity. Nair’s mention is limited to her attendance at what appears to have been a routine film-industry social event hosted by Maxwell in connection with a public promotion. Many prominent figures from entertainment, business, and politics appear in Epstein-related files due to his extensive network, with similar innocuous references.

The release has drawn attention in Indian and international media, with headlines highlighting Nair’s achievements alongside the document mention. No allegations of misconduct have been leveled against her in connection with these files. The documents continue to fuel public interest in Epstein’s associations, even as officials clarify that mere presence in records does not equate to culpability.
