Kathmandu, February 8, 2026 – The film industry is mourning the loss of veteran Nepali actor Sunil Thapa, who passed away on February 7, 2026, at the age of 68. Thapa, a celebrated figure in Nepali cinema and known for his contributions to Bollywood and Bhojpuri films, died in Kathmandu after his health deteriorated suddenly.
According to reports from The Kathmandu Post and hospital officials at Norvic Hospital in Thapathali, Thapa was brought in unconscious from his apartment in Shankhamul. He passed away during treatment, with doctors suspecting cardiac arrest as the cause. An electrocardiogram conducted in the early morning confirmed his death.
Thapa had a prolific career spanning decades, beginning in the 1970s as a model and photojournalist in Mumbai before transitioning to acting. He became a household name in Nepal for his iconic roles, particularly villainous characters like “Ratey Kaila” in films such as Chino. His commanding screen presence earned him widespread recognition across South Asian cinema.
In India, Thapa gained significant acclaim for his portrayal of the boxing coach M. Narjit Singh (often referred to as “Coach Sir”) opposite Priyanka Chopra in the 2014 biographical sports drama Mary Kom. His performance in the film earned him a nomination for the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He also appeared in the popular Amazon Prime series The Family Man, including its third season.
News of his passing deeply affected his co-stars and colleagues. Priyanka Chopra, who played the titular role in Mary Kom, shared an emotional tribute on Instagram on February 7-8, accompanied by a video montage from the film’s sets. In her heartfelt post, she wrote:
“You will always be my Coach Sir. You kept me together when I had just lost my dad. You loved me and helped me through many tough days without even realising. Your warm hugs and your laugh will always be part of my memories. Gone too young but never forgotten. Thank you for your kindness at a time that I was broken. Rest in peace Sunil Thapa. My condolences and prayers are with the family and loved ones.”
Chopra’s words highlighted the personal bond she shared with Thapa, who provided emotional support during the difficult period following the death of her father, Ashok Chopra.
Tributes from across the industry, including from actors like Manoj Bajpayee, have poured in, celebrating Thapa’s lasting contributions to both Nepali and Indian entertainment. His legacy as a versatile and impactful performer will continue to inspire generations of audiences and artists.
