How to Beat the Reed Devil in Crimson Desert: Complete Boss Guide

The Reed Devil, also known as the Devil of the Reed Fields, is one of the more challenging main story bosses in Crimson Desert. Players encounter this fight roughly midway through Chapter 3 during the quest “The Face Behind the Mask” in the Reedwin Valley (or Reedwind Valley) area. The battle consists of three distinct phases and tests your blocking, positioning, stamina management, and resource use. Many players struggle on their first attempt due to the preceding gauntlet of minions and the demanding second phase.

Preparation Before the Fight

Proper preparation makes a significant difference in this encounter. Here’s what you should do:

  • Stock up on consumables: The fight is long and attritional. Bring plenty of healing food such as cooked meat and spirit-restoring items. Equip them to your quick-use consumables wheel for instant access during the battle.
  • Gear and equipment: A sword-and-shield setup is highly effective thanks to strong blocking and parrying capabilities. Equip heavy or plate armor to better withstand the boss’s physical attacks. Upgrade your weapons and armor at a blacksmith (such as in Hernand Castle) before heading into the valley. If possible, use the grindstone located near the arena to sharpen your blade right before the fight.
  • Key skills to unlock and prioritize:
  • Turning Slash (Light Attack + Heavy Attack simultaneously) – essential for quickly destroying totems in Phase 2.
  • Force Palm (especially the 3-hit version) – excellent for rapidly building the boss’s stun meter.
  • Stab or Swift Stab (hold shoulder button + Triangle/Y) – safe damage output while keeping your shield raised; can also apply bleed.
  • Evasive Roll – useful for breaking out of stunlocks.
  • Basic Parry, Block, and Forward Slash remain core tools throughout the fight.
  • Fast travel point: Activate the Abyss Cresset (fast travel beacon) on the hill near the arena. This allows you to quickly return and restock if you die.

Tip for reaching the boss: You will chase the Reed Devil while carrying a lantern and fighting waves of minions. You can run past most enemies or destroy nearby scarecrows and totems with charged heavy attacks to stop additional spawns. Some players climb rocks from the bay side to skip large sections of the gauntlet. There is a cooking pot and grindstone at a small tent camp right before the arena.

General Combat Tips

  • Lock on to the boss early by holding the block/target button and pressing down on the D-pad.
  • Stay aggressive but disciplined. Keep your shield up almost constantly, parry during flurries, and counter immediately when the boss finishes an attack or sheathes his sword.
  • Use Force Palm frequently to fill the yellow stun meter. When it maxes out, you get a large damage window or a powerful finisher (hold Light + Heavy Attack).
  • Learn to dodge or roll sideways for unblockable attacks such as knife throws or charged lunges.
  • Observe the boss’s moves carefully — many of them, including the Swift Stab, can eventually be unlocked and used by your character.

Phase-by-Phase Strategy

Phase 1: Standard Melee Duel
The Reed Devil moves quickly, using sword flurries, teleports, and slashes.

  • Keep your shield raised at all times.
  • Spam parries during his combo attacks to create safe openings.
  • After he finishes a flurry or sheathes his weapon, counter aggressively with Force Palm followed by Forward Slash or Stab.
  • Block or strafe to avoid knife throws.
  • Focus on building his stun meter and landing finishers whenever possible.
A simple but effective approach is to block reliably and punish with heavy attacks or shielded Stab spam.

Phase 2: Totems and Clones (The Hardest Phase)
This is where most players wipe. The Reed Devil summons multiple totems (usually 4–5 scarecrows) and illusory clones of himself. He becomes much harder to damage until all totems are destroyed.

  • Priority target: Ignore the boss and clones as much as possible. Sprint to each totem and destroy them immediately.
  • Use Turning Slash (charged Light + Heavy Attack) to smash totems in one or two hits. Heavy attacks or Force Palm also work well.
  • Dodge and roll between totems while managing your stamina to avoid clone damage.
  • Once every totem is destroyed, the clones disappear and the phase ends. Clear any remaining adds if needed.
Stay calm, prioritize totems over damage, and use healing food liberally here.

Phase 3: Enhanced Melee
The final phase is essentially Phase 1 on a higher difficulty. The boss becomes more aggressive with faster teleports, additional ranged attacks, and more frequent unblockables.

  • Revert to the same block-and-counter rhythm from Phase 1.
  • Continue pressuring the stun meter for big damage opportunities.
  • Dodge knife throws to the side and heal whenever your health drops to a risky level.
  • Do not panic — consistent defense and timely counters will carry you through.

Final Advice

The entire fight can last 8–10 minutes or longer if you play cautiously. Take your time to learn the boss’s telegraphs, manage your stamina carefully, and do not hesitate to use your stored food. With practice, the Reed Devil shifts from frustrating to satisfying once you master the block-parry-counter flow and the totem-clearing priority in Phase 2.

After defeating him, you will usually receive his sword or related quest rewards. If you’re still having trouble, experiment with different skill combinations or return after upgrading your gear further.

Good luck, and may your shield hold strong against the Devil of the Reed Fields!
