Shillong Hosts First-Ever International Film Festival, Marking a New Chapter for Northeast Cinema

Shillong, March 25, 2026: The inaugural edition of the Shillong International Film Festival (SIFF 2026) kicked off today at the State Convention Centre in Shillong, ushering in a historic moment for Meghalaya and the entire Northeast region. Organised by the Directorate of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), Government of Meghalaya, the three-day festival running from March 25 to 27 aims to celebrate storytelling, creativity, and the vibrant artistic spirit of the hills while bridging local voices with global cinema.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma formally inaugurated the event as the chief guest, describing SIFF as a powerful platform that recognises the immense talent of filmmakers and artists from Meghalaya and the Northeast. Information and Public Relations Minister Lahkmen Rymbui attended as guest of honour. During the inauguration, the Chief Minister highlighted the state’s vision to develop a Film City and supporting infrastructure, including plans for a film institute and an OTT platform, to nurture emerging talent and position Meghalaya as a filmmaking hub.

The festival, themed around “Beyond Borders,” features a diverse lineup of screenings that showcase the rich cinematic traditions of the region alongside international entries. Films from Meghalaya, including Khasi and Jaintia productions, other Northeast states such as Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland, as well as national Indian cinema, are being screened. International films from countries like Bhutan and Vietnam are also part of the programme, bringing global perspectives to the scenic hills of Shillong.

Beyond screenings, SIFF 2026 includes enriching masterclasses and workshops designed to build capacity among aspiring filmmakers. Renowned filmmaker Dominic Sangma is conducting a session on screenplay writing, while cinematographer Arnab Gayan is leading a masterclass on cinematography. A student film competition adds an exciting competitive element, providing a platform for young creators to showcase their work. Entry to the festival is free, making it accessible to film enthusiasts, students, and the general public.

Officials have emphasised that the event is more than just a film festival—it is a strategic initiative to boost the local creative economy, promote tourism in Meghalaya, and amplify the unique storytelling traditions of the Northeast on an international stage. The State Convention Centre has been transformed into a vibrant hub for cinema lovers, storytellers, and creators over these three days.

With its maiden edition already generating significant excitement, SIFF 2026 is expected to lay a strong foundation for future editions and contribute meaningfully to the growth of film culture in the region. Filmmakers, cinephiles, and visitors from across the country and beyond are encouraged to participate in the screenings, discussions, and networking opportunities.

The festival continues until March 27, offering a rare cinematic experience in the heart of Meghalaya’s capital. For schedules and further details, visitors can check the official SIFF website or the DIPR Meghalaya platforms.
