Apple has officially opened pre-orders for the AirPods Max 2, its long-awaited update to the premium over-ear headphones. Pre-orders began on March 25, 2026, across the United States and more than 30 other countries and regions, with the first deliveries scheduled as early as April 1–3, 2026.
The new model was surprise-announced by Apple on March 16, 2026, via a press release. It brings meaningful internal upgrades while retaining the signature design of the original AirPods Max that launched in 2020.
Design and Build Remain Unchanged
Externally, the AirPods Max 2 look nearly identical to their predecessor. They feature the same aluminum frame, breathable knit-mesh canopy, memory foam ear cushions, and iconic Digital Crown for controls. The headphones weigh approximately 386 grams (13.6 oz) and continue to ship with the Smart Case. Five color options are available: Midnight, Starlight, Orange, Purple, and Blue.
Powered by the H2 Chip: Key Upgrades
The biggest changes come from the new H2 chip (one in each ear cup), which replaces the older H1 chip and brings computational audio advancements previously seen in AirPods Pro models.
- Active Noise Cancellation (ANC): Up to 1.5 times more effective than the original, thanks to improved algorithms and microphones that better detect and block external noise such as airplane engines or train rumble, while preserving audio clarity.
- Sound Quality: Enhanced high-fidelity audio with deeper bass, clearer mids and highs, and greater detail. A new high-dynamic range amplifier contributes to cleaner, richer sound reproduction.
- Intelligent Features: The H2 chip unlocks several smart capabilities:
- Adaptive Audio – automatically balances ANC and Transparency mode based on your environment.
- Conversation Awareness – lowers volume when you start speaking to someone nearby.
- Personalized Volume – learns your listening preferences over time.
- Voice Isolation – improves call clarity by focusing on your voice.
- Live Translation (beta) – powered by Apple Intelligence; hold the listening mode button to translate conversations in real time into your preferred language (available in select languages).
Additional perks include support for lossless audio over a USB-C connection (up to 24-bit/48 kHz with a compatible cable), Bluetooth 5.3, up to 20 hours of battery life with ANC and Spatial Audio enabled, studio-quality audio recording, and camera remote functionality for content creators. Spatial Audio with dynamic head tracking and Personalized Spatial Audio continue to deliver an immersive experience within the Apple ecosystem.
Pricing and Availability
The AirPods Max 2 are priced at $549 in the US, the same as the previous generation. In India, the headphones are available at ₹67,900. AppleCare+ protection is offered as an optional add-on.
Customers can place orders directly on Apple’s website or through the Apple Store app. Major retailers like Amazon are also listing the headphones with similar early April shipping estimates. In India, pre-orders are open via the official Apple India site and authorized resellers, with availability expected in early April 2026.
Should You Upgrade?
For owners of the original AirPods Max, the improvements in ANC, sound quality, and new intelligent features represent a solid but incremental upgrade rather than a complete redesign. The external appearance and overall form factor remain the same, so the decision largely depends on how much you value better noise cancellation and the added smart features.
If you’re coming from older headphones or prioritize seamless integration with Apple devices (including effortless device switching, Spatial Audio, and now Live Translation), the AirPods Max 2 offer a more compelling package. At this premium price point, however, some buyers may also consider strong competitors from Sony or Bose.
