Ahida Sarmai: The Young Actress with Down Syndrome Making Waves in Bollywood’s ‘Dhurandhar: The Revenge’

In a landmark moment for inclusivity in Indian cinema, 15-year-old Ahida Sarmai has emerged as a shining example of talent transcending barriers. The Delhi-based child actress, theatre artist, painter, dancer, and visual artist, who has Down syndrome, delivered a heartfelt performance as Arjun Rampal’s on-screen daughter in the much-anticipated 2026 Bollywood film Dhurandhar: The Revenge (also known as Dhurandhar 2), directed by Aditya Dhar and starring Ranveer Singh.

Though her role is brief—just a couple of lines—Ahida’s presence adds genuine emotional depth to the film. Her natural acting and the warmth she brought to the screen have been widely praised as a positive step toward greater representation in mainstream Hindi cinema. The performance highlights how talent and passion can flourish regardless of ability, inspiring audiences and industry insiders alike.

Ahida hails from a loving and supportive family in Delhi. Her mother, Suprena Sarmai, has been her biggest champion, encouraging her artistic pursuits from a young age. Suprena recently shared how the Dhurandhar team—particularly director Aditya Dhar and co-star Arjun Rampal—created a welcoming and patient environment on set. Ahida found the experience comfortable and enjoyable, completing her scenes in just four to five takes with gentle guidance from the director rather than strict line memorization. As a caring elder sister, Ahida’s family life reflects the same warmth she brings to her performances.

Her entry into the film came organically. A video of Ahida dancing joyfully to the song “Shararat” from Dhurandhar went viral on Instagram, catching the attention of casting director Mukesh Chhabra’s team. After a relaxed audition, she was selected the very next day for her authentic talent and screen presence.

Even before Dhurandhar, Ahida was already making her mark in the arts. She has performed in stage productions such as Ramayana, Asha Ki Kiran, and Woh Khula Aasaman with theatre groups dedicated to special children, including Raasha Theatre. She has also appeared in two upcoming short films—Maktoomb and Bebaquain, the latter exploring a special child’s dream of becoming an actor.

Beyond acting, Ahida is a gifted visual artist and painter whose works have been exhibited at prestigious venues like Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi and the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) in Mumbai. One of her photographs was shortlisted for a UK book featuring special children. She actively participates in fashion shows, classical dance performances, and regularly attends painting and acting classes, along with gym sessions to stay active.

Her achievements extend to pageantry as well. In 2022, she was named runner-up at Miss India (Down Syndrome), and in 2024 she secured the title of 1st runner-up at Miss Delhi (Special Children). Ahida has also served as a brand ambassador for the Nirvana World NGO, using her platform to spread awareness and positivity.

The film industry has responded warmly to Ahida’s debut. At a special screening in Mumbai, Ranveer Singh affectionately called her “cutie” and praised her as “amazing,” while co-stars like Sara Arjun and director Aditya Dhar offered hugs and words of encouragement. Media coverage and audience reactions have celebrated her as a beacon of perseverance, determination, and the power of family support.

Ahida herself remains grounded and passionate about her crafts. She has shared that she loves painting every day and finds equal joy in dancing and acting. Her journey proves that with encouragement and opportunity, every individual can shine brightly—no matter the challenges they face.

As Dhurandhar: The Revenge hits theatres, Ahida Sarmai’s story is more than just a casting choice; it is a powerful reminder that Bollywood is evolving toward a more inclusive future, one heartfelt performance at a time.
