Meta has officially kicked off a limited early test of a new paid subscription tier for Instagram, dubbed “Instagram Plus,” marking the company’s latest push to introduce premium features while keeping the core app free for all users.
The test is currently live in just three countries: Mexico, Japan, and the Philippines. Eligible users in these markets are now seeing an in-app option to subscribe to Instagram Plus for a monthly fee that ranges from roughly $1.07 to $2.20 USD, depending on local currency. In Mexico, for example, the price is listed at MX$39.
Unlike the existing Meta Verified blue-check subscription, Instagram Plus is designed as an add-on layer of exclusive tools focused on enhanced privacy, analytics, and audience management. According to early tester reports and screenshots circulating online, the subscription unlocks the following premium features:
- Stealth Story viewing: Users can browse others’ Stories anonymously without triggering the usual “seen” notification or read receipts.
- Rewatch analytics: Detailed insights showing exactly how many times viewers have rewatched a user’s own Stories or other content.
- Advanced audience controls: Unlimited custom audience lists and the ability to view a complete list of followers who do not follow back.
Core Instagram functions—posting, messaging, browsing the feed, and interacting with content—remain completely free and unchanged for everyone, whether subscribed or not.
Meta first teased plans for paid subscriptions across its family of apps (Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp) in late January 2026. The company described the upcoming tiers as optional upgrades that would deliver “more productivity, creativity, and expanded AI capabilities.” The Instagram Plus test represents the first concrete rollout of that vision.
The move mirrors similar strategies already in place at rival platforms, such as Snapchat+ and X Premium, and is widely viewed as Meta’s ongoing effort to diversify revenue streams beyond advertising. Analysts note that the low price point and limited geographic scope suggest Meta is still gathering user feedback before deciding on a broader global launch or additional features.
For now, Instagram Plus remains in its earliest testing phase. Users outside the three pilot countries will not yet see the subscription prompt, and Meta has not shared a timeline for wider availability. The company is expected to monitor engagement closely and refine the offering based on early results.
As the social media landscape continues to evolve, Instagram Plus could signal a broader shift toward hybrid free-and-paid models across Meta’s apps. Users in the test regions who spot the new option in their profile or settings can choose to subscribe immediately, while the rest of the world watches to see what premium features might arrive next.
