Why Evangelical Christians Strongly Support Donald Trump

Despite Donald Trump’s personal history and unapologetic style, white evangelical Christians continue to back him at remarkably high levels. In the 2024 presidential election, roughly 80-82 percent of white evangelicals voted for him. Even well into his second term, recent polling shows around 69-72 percent approval among this group.

This support is not rooted in viewing Trump as a personal moral hero or pious leader. Rather, it stems from a pragmatic, issue-driven assessment: evangelicals believe his policies deliver critical victories on matters they consider biblically essential, while positioning him as a defender against cultural forces they see as hostile to their faith.

Central to this is the issue of abortion. Trump appointed three Supreme Court justices who made the 2022 Dobbs decision possible, which overturned Roe v. Wade and returned the issue to the states. For many evangelicals, abortion represents the paramount moral crisis of the age. This judicial legacy alone, they argue, outweighs Trump’s personal shortcomings.

Trump also advanced religious liberty protections, such as for faith-based adoption agencies, Christian schools, and conscience rights. On cultural fronts, his opposition to certain transgender policies in schools, sports, and medicine, along with resistance to expansive gender ideology in education, aligns closely with evangelical views on family, sexuality, and biblical anthropology.

Strong support for Israel is another key factor. Policies like recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and the Abraham Accords are viewed through a theological lens. Many evangelicals, influenced by dispensationalist theology, see blessing Israel as bringing divine favor, citing Genesis 12:3.

A recurring explanation among evangelical leaders is the “Cyrus model.” Just as the ancient Persian king Cyrus—a non-believer—was used by God to free the Jewish people and restore the Temple (Isaiah 45), Trump is seen as a flawed instrument God can employ for larger purposes. This framing allows supporters to separate personal character from political results. Biblical precedents of imperfect figures like King David further reinforce this view.

Support is overwhelmingly concentrated among white evangelicals. Black Protestants and many Hispanic evangelicals lean Democratic. While a minority of “Never Trump” evangelicals prioritize character above policy, they remain a small voice within the broader community.

In essence, evangelical support for Trump is transactional and strategic. It is less about affection for the man and more about what they perceive as survival and advancement of their core values in an increasingly secular culture. Polls consistently show that issues like abortion, religious freedom, border security, the economy, and opposition to progressive social policies drive their vote far more than personal piety or rhetoric.

This dynamic has held steady across multiple elections and continues into his second term.
