New Delhi/Aizawl, April 25, 2026 — In a strategic push to boost its tourism sector, the northeastern state of Mizoram is positioning itself as the ‘Winter Capital of India’. The state government, in collaboration with NITI Aayog, is gearing up to host a high-profile Tourism Conclave in October 2026 to attract investors, industry leaders, and stakeholders.
On April 24, 2026, Mizoram’s Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar held key discussions with officials of NITI Aayog at Mizoram House in New Delhi. The meeting focused on finalizing preparations for the upcoming conclave and charting out a roadmap to establish Mizoram as a preferred winter destination for domestic and international tourists.
A preparatory meeting has been proposed for May 2026 at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. This pre-conclave event will bring together tourism industry experts and stakeholders for brainstorming sessions, with the inputs expected to shape the agenda and outcomes of the main October conclave.
The initiative builds on earlier engagements between the Mizoram government and NITI Aayog, including discussions held in November 2025. The October conclave aims to generate actionable strategies for tourism development, encourage longer visitor stays, create new attractions and activities, and promote sustainable growth in the sector.
Mizoram’s appeal as a winter destination stems from its pleasant cool climate during the winter months, picturesque hilly landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and growing infrastructure. The recent inauguration of the railway link to Sairang near Aizawl has significantly improved connectivity, leading to a noticeable rise in tourist arrivals. The state is emphasizing eco-tourism, nature-based experiences, and responsible travel practices to ensure development aligns with environmental conservation.
Mizoram has already made strides in promoting itself through events such as the Mizoram Travel Fest in 2025 and has received recognition for its emerging eco-tourism initiatives. This latest push is part of broader efforts to unlock the tourism potential of India’s Northeast region, leveraging improved air, rail, and road connectivity.
Officials believe that with its serene environment and unique offerings, Mizoram can become an attractive alternative for travelers seeking respite from the winter chill in other parts of the country or looking for offbeat winter getaways.
The state government remains optimistic that the upcoming conclave will not only elevate Mizoram’s profile on the national tourism map but also foster partnerships for long-term sustainable development in the sector. Further details about the October event are expected to be announced soon.
