In a major convenience boost for millions of users, WhatsApp has introduced a new feature that allows you to recharge your prepaid mobile number directly within the messaging app. The rollout, which began in India, integrates seamlessly with popular operators and payment methods, eliminating the need to switch between apps for topping up your phone balance.
Powered by PayU and Major Operators
The feature is powered by PayU and currently supports Airtel, Jio, and Vodafone Idea (Vi). It is being rolled out gradually to both Android and iOS users, so availability may vary. If you don’t see the option yet, ensure your WhatsApp app is updated to the latest version and check back in a few days.
How to Recharge Your Phone on WhatsApp: Step-by-Step
- Open WhatsApp on your mobile device.
Look for the ₹ (rupee) icon on the main chat screen, typically located near the camera icon at the top.
If the icon is not visible, tap the three dots (More options) in the top right → select Payments. - Select Mobile Prepaid Recharge.
Tap on the “Mobile Recharge” or “Mobile Prepaid Recharge” option. - Enter the Mobile Number.
You can choose your own registered number, select from saved contacts, or manually enter any prepaid number you wish to recharge. - Confirm Operator and Circle.
WhatsApp will automatically detect or let you select the telecom operator (Airtel, Jio, or Vi) and the service circle. - Choose a Recharge Plan.
Browse through available plans, including talk-time, data, or combo packs, and select the one that best suits your needs. - Review Details.
Double-check the number, operator, plan amount, and validity before proceeding. - Proceed to Payment.
Choose your preferred payment method:
- UPI (fastest – just enter your UPI PIN)
- Debit Card
- Credit Card
- Complete the Transaction.
Once payment is successful, you will receive an instant confirmation within the app. The recharge is processed immediately, and you can view your transaction history in the Payments section.
Key Advantages
- Recharge any prepaid number — yours or someone else’s — without leaving the chat.
- Quick access to other payment services via the same ₹ icon, including UPI transfers, bill payments, and more.
- Secure and seamless experience using your already-linked bank accounts or UPI handles in WhatsApp Payments.
- Works only on the mobile app (Android/iOS) and not yet on WhatsApp Web or Desktop.
This new feature significantly enhances WhatsApp’s utility as an all-in-one platform for communication and everyday financial tasks. With India’s massive digital payments adoption, direct recharges are expected to save users time and simplify routine mobile top-ups.
If the recharge option hasn’t appeared for you yet, keep your app updated and ensure you have an active UPI setup in WhatsApp Payments. The phased rollout means wider availability is just around the corner.
Stay tuned for further updates as WhatsApp continues to expand its payments ecosystem in India.
