LPG Booking Rules to Change from May 1: What Gas Cylinder Users in India Need to Know

As May 1, 2026, approaches, millions of households relying on domestic LPG cylinders (primarily 14.2 kg) are bracing for updates to booking, delivery, and related processes. The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, along with oil marketing companies (OMCs) like Indian Oil (Indane), Bharat Petroleum (Bharat Gas), and Hindustan Petroleum (HP Gas), is tightening rules to ensure better supply management, curb diversion of subsidized cylinders, and address global price pressures amid geopolitical tensions.

While not every aspect is entirely new, several measures are being formalized or made stricter starting May 1. Here’s a comprehensive guide for consumers.

Stricter Booking Intervals to Prevent Hoarding

The minimum waiting period between two LPG refills has been standardized and enforced more rigorously:

  • Urban areas: At least 25 days (increased from the earlier 21 days). Attempts to book earlier will be automatically blocked by the system.
  • Rural areas: Up to 45 days.

This change aims to balance demand, reduce black marketing, and optimize distribution during periods of tight supply. Consumers are advised to check their next eligible booking date on the MyLPG portal or app well in advance.

OTP-Based Delivery to Become Mandatory

From May 1, the Delivery Authentication Code (DAC/OTP) system is expected to be fully mandatory and permanent. Upon booking, an OTP will be sent to the registered mobile number. Delivery personnel will verify this code before handing over the cylinder.

This step has already achieved high adoption (around 94-95%) and is designed to ensure subsidized cylinders reach genuine users only. Ensure your mobile number is correctly linked to your LPG connection via the MyLPG portal to avoid delivery issues.

eKYC Requirements for Subsidy Continuity

Aadhaar-based eKYC remains mandatory, particularly for beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). It is typically required once per financial year to avail subsidies on refills (beyond the initial free ones for new connections).

Non-Ujjwala users who have already completed it may not need to repeat the process. Complete eKYC promptly through the MyLPG app/portal or authorized centers to prevent any disruption in subsidy benefits.

Expected Price Revision on May 1

LPG prices are reviewed monthly. Domestic 14.2 kg cylinders saw a recent hike of around Rs 60, while commercial 19 kg cylinders experienced multiple sharp increases. A further revision—potentially another hike—is widely anticipated on or around May 1 due to rising global crude and LPG costs.

Check official OMC websites or the MyLPG portal on May 1 for updated prices in your city. Subsidies continue to be transferred directly to eligible consumers’ bank accounts via DBT.

Additional Important Updates

  • PNG Push: In cities with piped natural gas (PNG) infrastructure, new LPG connections may be restricted, and existing users could face supply cessation after a few months if they do not switch. The government is actively expanding PNG networks.
  • Supply Assurance: Despite import challenges, the government has prioritized domestic LPG supply and arranged extra imports to maintain availability. No widespread shortages are reported.
  • Online Booking Preferred: Nearly 98% of bookings now happen online. Use the MyLPG app, website, WhatsApp, or IVR for hassle-free refills.

Tips for Smooth Experience

  • Link/update your Aadhaar and mobile number in the MyLPG account.
  • Plan refills according to the new intervals and track status regularly.
  • For complaints or issues, contact your local distributor or the helpline numbers provided on OMC apps.

These measures reflect efforts to streamline the LPG ecosystem amid fluctuating global conditions while protecting genuine consumers.
