YouTube Rolls Out Picture-in-Picture Feature Free Worldwide

YouTube has announced a major update that brings the popular Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode to all users globally at no extra cost. The change, revealed on April 29, 2026, ends the previous restriction where free users outside the United States had to subscribe to YouTube Premium to access this convenient multitasking feature.

Expanded Access for Free Users

Previously, PiP was limited for non-Premium users in most regions, requiring a paid subscription for the ability to watch videos in a floating window while using other apps. With this rollout, free users on Android and iOS can now enjoy PiP for longform, non-music content. The feature is being phased out gradually and is expected to reach everyone worldwide in the coming months.

To use it, simply start playing a supported video in the YouTube app, then swipe up or press the home button to shrink it into a movable, resizable window. Users can continue watching while browsing the web, chatting, or running other applications.

Important Limitations

While this is a significant win for free users, some restrictions remain:

  • PiP support for music videos and certain other content is still exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers.
  • Premium users continue to enjoy full PiP functionality across all video types, along with other benefits like ad-free viewing, background playback, and offline downloads.

The update applies specifically to the mobile apps on Android and iOS. No changes have been announced for the desktop or web versions of YouTube.

A Boost for Multitasking

This move makes YouTube more accessible and user-friendly, especially for those who prefer watching videos on the go without committing to a subscription. For users in regions like Assam, India, and elsewhere, updating the YouTube app should eventually unlock the feature as the rollout progresses.

YouTube Premium remains a strong option for those seeking the complete experience, including ad removal and enhanced music features. The company has not shared exact timelines for full global availability, so some users may need to wait a short period before seeing the option appear.
