Neetu Kapoor Opens Up About Her Darkest Days: Battling Grief and Loneliness After Rishi Kapoor’s Death

In a deeply personal and candid conversation on Soha Ali Khan’s YouTube podcast All About Her, actress Neetu Kapoor recently shared the profound emotional struggles she faced following the passing of her husband, veteran actor Rishi Kapoor. The couple had been married for over four decades, and his death on April 30, 2020, after a long battle with leukemia, left Neetu in one of the darkest phases of her life.

Neetu described the immediate aftermath as overwhelming. The once lively home they had shared for years suddenly felt empty and silent, intensifying her feelings of loneliness and grief. She opened up about battling severe insomnia in the weeks and months that followed, a struggle so intense that it pushed her toward coping mechanisms she never imagined she would need.

“I got into drinking… I could not sleep without drinking,” Neetu revealed. Having always maintained a disciplined and health-conscious lifestyle, she admitted she did not like the person she was becoming during this period. In her desperation for rest, she sought medical help. A gynaecologist friend visited her home every night for nearly 10 days, administering injections to help her sleep and staying until Neetu drifted off. The doctor also ensured household staff kept a close watch on her well-being. By the 11th or 12th day, Neetu felt strong enough to move forward without this support.

Despite the heavy criticism and trolling she faced from the public for returning to work relatively soon after her loss, Neetu explained that resuming her career was vital for her mental health. She began shooting for films like JugJugg Jeeyo to regain her confidence and find purpose in the routine. “I just started working… to get the confidence back… I needed to get out,” she shared. Work provided the much-needed structure and distraction from the crushing silence at home.

Neetu also touched upon her brief experience with therapy, noting that it did not particularly resonate with her. Instead, she found healing through family support, close friends, and staying purposeful. She emphasized that everyone’s journey with grief is unique and personal, and there is no single right way to navigate it.

Her honest reflections have struck a chord with many, sparking important conversations around mental health, widowhood, the pressures of public scrutiny on celebrities’ mourning periods, and the resilience required to rebuild life after losing a life partner.
