“Mandate Looted”: Mamata Banerjee Vows to Rebuild Every Office and Never Bow Down

Kolkata, May 16, 2026 – Defiant even in defeat, Trinamool Congress chief and outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has accused the BJP of “looting” the people’s mandate in the recently concluded West Bengal Assembly elections and pledged to rebuild her party from the ground up.

In a series of meetings with party candidates and workers over the past ten days, Banerjee launched a sharp attack on the election results, claiming that more than 100 seats were snatched through irregularities. She alleged complicity by the Election Commission, central forces, and manipulation of voter lists and counting processes.

“We have been looted. This is loot, loot, loot,” she said, describing the outcome as “immoral and illegal.” Banerjee asserted that while the TMC may have been declared defeated, the party had achieved a “moral victory.” She initially resisted formally stepping down as Chief Minister, stating, “I have not lost. We didn’t lose the election.”

Historic Setback for TMC

The 2026 West Bengal polls delivered a landslide victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party, which won 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, comfortably surpassing the majority and two-thirds marks. This result brings an end to the TMC’s 15-year rule in the state that began in 2011. The Trinamool Congress was reduced to roughly 80 seats, suffering a major erosion in both seats and vote share despite a record voter turnout of nearly 93%.

Mamata Banerjee herself suffered a personal defeat in her stronghold of Bhabanipur, losing to BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.

Call for Rebuilding and Resistance

Undeterred, Banerjee has urged TMC workers to immediately repair and reopen damaged party offices across West Bengal. “Those who want to leave can leave. The rest of us will rebuild,” she declared. In a symbolic gesture, she offered to personally paint and renovate the offices, adding, “Trinamool Congress will never bow down.”

She called on party cadres to fight from the streets, strengthen alliances within the INDIA bloc, and form fact-finding committees to document alleged electoral malpractices.

Political Fallout

The massive defeat has triggered internal unrest within the TMC, with reports of discontent among several leaders and speculation of possible defections. Banerjee’s aggressive posturing appears aimed at rallying loyalists and preventing further erosion of the party base.

The BJP’s triumph marks the first time a right-leaning party has formed a government in West Bengal. Suvendu Adhikari, who defeated Mamata Banerjee, is expected to play a prominent role in the new government.

While some opposition parties, including the Congress, have echoed demands for repolling in certain seats, the Election Commission has upheld the declared results. Legal challenges and street protests are likely in the coming days, though such “mandate stolen” claims rarely overturn officially certified outcomes.

As West Bengal enters a new political chapter, Mamata Banerjee’s combative response signals that she intends to remain a powerful voice in opposition and is preparing for a long-term battle to regain lost ground.
