Guwahati, May 17, 2026: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday inaugurated India’s first AI-powered “phygital” bank branch of Slice Small Finance Bank at GS Road in Guwahati. The launch marks a significant milestone in the country’s banking sector, blending traditional physical banking with advanced artificial intelligence capabilities.
The new branch aims to redefine customer experience by offering a seamless mix of in-person services and cutting-edge digital solutions. Key features include fully paperless transactions, automated customer onboarding processes, AI-driven personalised financial products, and faster customer support. The branch also leverages UPI-powered banking to enhance simplicity and promote greater financial inclusion across urban and underserved segments.
Speaking at the inauguration event, Chief Minister Sarma highlighted the branch as a step forward in Assam’s digital transformation journey. He emphasised its potential to create new opportunities for the youth in fintech and entrepreneurship while strengthening financial access in the region. Sarma described the initiative as a testament to Assam’s readiness to embrace technology-driven banking solutions.
Slice Small Finance Bank, which has deep roots in the North East following its merger with North East Small Finance Bank, views this branch as a flagship project. Rajan Bajaj, MD & CEO of Slice, along with other senior executives, attended the event. Notable dignitaries present included NPCI CEO and Assam BJP MLA Ashok Singhal.
This development aligns with broader efforts to position Guwahati and Assam as emerging hubs for innovation and fintech in eastern India. The AI-powered branch is expected to serve as a model for future banking infrastructure across the country, combining efficiency, personalisation, and accessibility.
Officials believe the initiative will not only improve banking services for residents of Guwahati but also set new standards for inclusive and intelligent financial services in India.
