Taste of Shillong Opens First Retail Outlet in Police Bazaar, Eyes Statewide Expansion

Shillong, May 17, 2026 — In a sweet milestone for local entrepreneurship, homegrown Meghalaya ice cream brand Taste of Shillong has inaugurated its first retail outlet at Dreamland Arcade in the bustling Police Bazaar area of Shillong. The inauguration ceremony featured a warm welcome address by Luziana Wahlang, followed by the ceremonial ribbon-cutting by Saloni Verma, IAS, Executive Director of the Meghalaya Basin Management Agency. The event highlighted the growing support for startups in the state, with special recognition for the role played by PRIME Meghalaya’s incubation and mentorship programs.

Founder Sushmi Mazumdar, along with co-founder Mishmi Mazumdar, turned a challenge into an opportunity. While running a small ice cream retail shop, the duo faced consistent supply shortages amid rising customer demand. This gap inspired Sushmi to start making ice cream at home using basic kitchen tools. The homemade batches quickly won hearts with their quality and unique taste, leading to the formal birth of Taste of Shillong.

The brand stands out for its commitment to preservative-free, from-scratch ice creams crafted with locally sourced Meghalaya ingredients and fruits. It currently offers over 25 flavours, including distinctive local creations such as Khasi Rice Ice Cream, Sohiong Ice Cream, Star Fruit Ice Cream, and the popular “Bee Mee” variant. These innovative flavours aim to capture the essence of Meghalayan heritage in every scoop.

Ambitious Expansion Plans

Speaking at the launch, Sushmi Mazumdar reflected on her entrepreneurial journey and expressed gratitude to fellow entrepreneurs and the PRIME Meghalaya team for their support. The founders have set a clear vision: to establish outlets in every district of Meghalaya, with a special focus on popular tourist destinations. Their goal is to introduce the world to innovative, locally inspired flavours while boosting the state’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
