IOC Assures No Shortage of LPG, Fuel Supply Remains Stable in Meghalaya

Shillong, May 21, 2026 — The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and other public sector oil marketing companies have reassured the people of Meghalaya that there is no shortage of LPG, petrol, or diesel in the state, urging citizens to avoid panic buying amid circulating rumours.

Sashwati Mudoi, IOC’s State-Level Coordinator for Oil Industry in Meghalaya and Manager of LPG-Sales (Shillong Area), confirmed that supplies of all petroleum products remain normal, stable, and adequate across the state. This assurance covers operations by IOC, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL).

Adequate Stocks and Distribution

Domestic LPG supply continues uninterrupted, with priority given to household consumers. Meghalaya has approximately 3.7 lakh LPG consumers served by 66 distributors. Stocks are sufficient, and cylinder deliveries are proceeding normally, usually within five days. Minor delays may occur only in remote areas due to logistical challenges, officials said.

For petrol and diesel, all 334 operational retail outlets in the state are functioning without any disruption. Buffer stocks maintained in the Northeast region, including Meghalaya, are robust, typically covering 5–6 days of demand and extendable up to 10–12 days if required.

Context and Future Measures

The statement from IOC comes in response to concerns possibly triggered by global supply chain uncertainties, including developments in West Asia that affect India’s LPG imports. However, the Northeast region largely relies on local refineries in Assam, ensuring steady supply lines.

To further strengthen self-reliance, a new LPG bottling plant in Meghalaya is scheduled to be commissioned between July and August 2026. This facility is expected to significantly boost local storage and distribution capacity.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have appealed to the public not to hoard fuel or LPG cylinders. Consumers facing any difficulty can contact their authorised distributors or the nearest IOC, BPCL, or HPCL outlet for real-time updates.

This proactive reassurance aims to maintain normalcy and prevent unnecessary anxiety among residents of the hill state.
