Prince William has revealed that he and his wife, Catherine, Princess of Wales, took a candid and open approach when discussing her cancer diagnosis with their three young children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.
In a series of interviews conducted in November 2025, including one with Brazilian TV host Luciano Huck during an Earthshot Prize event in Brazil, the Prince of Wales shared insights into the family’s private handling of Kate’s illness. According to William, the couple made a deliberate decision to communicate openly rather than shielding their children from the difficult reality.
“We chose to communicate a lot more with the kids and decided to tell our children everything, both the good news and the bad,” William explained. He emphasized answering their questions directly and in an age-appropriate manner, acknowledging that “most of the time, hiding stuff from them doesn’t work.” While he described the process as a delicate “balancing act” that sometimes felt like oversharing, he believes transparency ultimately served the family better.
William noted there is “no manual” for navigating such a challenging situation. His primary focus was providing the children with a sense of security, safety, and reassurance that their mother would be okay, while recognizing that each child—George (now 12), Charlotte (now 10), and Louis (now 7)—copes differently.
This family-first strategy aligns with Kate’s own public statement in March 2024, when she announced her cancer diagnosis in a heartfelt video message. At the time, she said: “It has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be OK.”
The year 2024 proved to be one of the most difficult periods in William’s life. In addition to supporting his wife through her diagnosis and treatment, he was also dealing with his father King Charles III’s cancer diagnosis. Throughout the ordeal, the couple prioritized privacy for their children before making any public disclosures, aiming to maintain as much normalcy as possible.
By choosing honesty over secrecy, Prince William and Princess Kate have demonstrated a parenting philosophy centered on trust, resilience, and family unity during one of their most trying times.
