Mizoram Introduces Work-From-Home and ‘No Official Vehicle Day’ to Boost Fuel Conservation

Aizawl: In a bid to reduce fuel consumption and promote austerity, the Mizoram government has announced a series of temporary measures for its employees, including mandatory work-from-home (WFH) rotations and a weekly “No Official Vehicle Day.”

Under the new directives issued by the General Administration Department, approximately 20% of employees in each government department will work from home on a rotational basis. Essential services such as healthcare, emergency response, water and power supply, transport, disaster management, and law & order have been exempted from the WFH policy.

Additionally, every Wednesday has been declared as “No Official Vehicle Day.” On these days, government employees have been encouraged to walk, use public transport, carpool, or opt for personal vehicles instead of official government transport. The government has also introduced staggered office timings in Aizawl to ease traffic congestion: one group of employees will follow the 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM shift, while another will work from 10:30 AM to 6:30 PM.

The measures, which came into effect on May 21, 2026, also include restrictions on official travel and a broader push to curtail unnecessary government expenditure.

The initiative is a direct response to the ongoing global oil supply uncertainties caused by the West Asia crisis, particularly disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. It aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal to states and citizens to adopt fuel-saving practices and exercise economic prudence amid rising fuel costs and import dependency.

Mizoram, a hilly state with limited public transport infrastructure in several areas, aims to set an example through these steps. Officials believe that even modest reductions in vehicle usage and office attendance can contribute meaningfully to lowering the state’s fuel bill and reducing traffic pressure in Aizawl.

The orders are expected to remain in place for the short term, with the government likely to review their impact based on fuel price trends and ground-level feedback.

This move reflects a growing trend among Indian states to implement localized conservation strategies during periods of energy market volatility.
