Chennai, May 23, 2026: In a significant political development, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), led by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, has firmly consolidated its hold over Tamil Nadu politics following its impressive performance in the April 2026 Assembly elections. The party is now poised to make its debut in the Rajya Sabha, marking a major milestone in its rapid rise.
TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the 234-member Tamil Nadu Assembly with 108 seats, falling just short of the 118-seat majority mark. However, the party quickly stitched together a stable coalition with support from the Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Left parties, and some factions of the AIADMK. This alliance enabled TVK to form the government comfortably, with Joseph Vijay taking oath as Chief Minister around May 10, 2026. The new government successfully passed the floor test with a comfortable margin, reportedly securing 144 votes.
The decisive victory has given the TVK-led alliance complete control over the state legislature. With 18 Rajya Sabha seats allocated to Tamil Nadu, the ruling coalition now holds the numerical strength to influence elections to the Upper House. One Rajya Sabha seat from the state is scheduled for election in mid-June 2026, and sources indicate that TVK is expected to field its first candidate for the seat soon.
This development is particularly noteworthy as TVK, which was founded just about two years ago, contested its maiden major electoral battle in 2026 and has already disrupted the traditional dominance of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK). The party’s entry into the Rajya Sabha will give it a national platform and a voice in Parliament barely months after assuming power in Tamil Nadu.
Political observers view this as a strong indicator of the stability of the new regime. The ability to send a representative to the Rajya Sabha not only strengthens TVK’s position at the Centre but also signals its growing organisational strength and acceptance among the political class.
As of now, TVK does not hold any seats in the Rajya Sabha. The upcoming biennial elections present the party with its first opportunity to enter the Upper House, a significant step in its journey from a nascent political outfit to a formidable force in Tamil Nadu politics.
