The journey of IAS Ummul Kher is one of astonishing grit and resilience, having faced a barrage of challenges that would have defeated most. Born into extreme poverty in Rajasthan, she was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease), a rare disorder that resulted in her suffering 16 fractures and undergoing eight major surgeries by her teenage years. Her family, living in a Delhi slum, opposed her pursuit of education beyond the eighth grade, leading her to make the painful decision to leave home at the tender age of 14. Living independently in a dangerous slum area, Ummul supported herself by tutoring local children to pay her rent and tuition fees. Despite these immense financial and physical struggles, she excelled academically, gaining admission to the prestigious Gargi College and later pursuing her Master’s and MPhil/PhD at JNU. Her relentless hard work culminated in her realizing her lifelong dream: clearing the highly competitive UPSC Civil Services Examination in her very first attempt in 2017, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 420 and becoming an IAS officer. Her story is a shining testament to the power of determination over destiny. #UPSC #IAS #UmmulKher #Inspiration #CivilServices #SuccessStory
