Google is set to update its advertising policies on January 29, 2024, to allow certain cryptocurrency products, including Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs), to be advertised on its platform. This policy change follows the United States Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) approval of 11 spot Bitcoin ETF applications on January 10, 2024.
The updated advertising requirements will include financial products that allow investors to trade shares in trusts holding large pools of digital currency, which aligns closely with Bitcoin ETFs. Bitcoin ETFs enable investors to buy shares in the fund’s Bitcoin holdings, democratizing access to Bitcoin investment. Previously, options like the Grayscale Bitcoin Trust (GBTC) were only available to accredited investors, but the shift to spot Bitcoin ETFs makes them accessible to the general public.
This move by Google could significantly impact the cryptocurrency market by leveraging its massive reach. Advertisements for Bitcoin ETFs, which are regulated and provide an accessible avenue for cryptocurrency investment, may further legitimize the cryptocurrency market and promote broader adoption.
However, it is important to note that Google’s policy on “cryptocurrency coin trusts” remains somewhat unclear, leaving room for interpretation regarding which specific cryptocurrency products will be eligible for advertising. The policy also outlines several restrictions and emphasizes compliance with local laws and industry standards, particularly regarding financial promotions and risk disclosure in crypto advertising【0†source】 [❞] [❞].
