Initially, the U.S. was at the forefront of developing and deploying armed drones, particularly for counterterrorism operations. However, over the years, several other countries have developed, acquired, and used armed drones.
Countries such as Israel, China, Russia, Turkey, Iran, and the United Kingdom, among others, have their own drone programs. These countries have not only used drones for surveillance but also for targeted attacks, reflecting a significant shift in how modern warfare is conducted. The proliferation of drone technology is partly due to advancements in technology, reduced costs, and the strategic advantages that drones offer, such as the ability to strike targets without risking the lives of military personnel.
This spread of drone technology raises various international security and ethical concerns, including issues related to sovereignty, the rules of engagement, and the potential for civilian casualties. The use of drones in conflict zones has become a topic of international debate, with discussions on the need for regulations and frameworks to manage their use in warfare and counterterrorism operations.
