Meghalaya Govt Gets Positive Response from Defence Ministry Over Umroi Airport Expansion

The Meghalaya government has received a significant boost for its efforts to enhance air connectivity in the state, with a positive response from the Defence Ministry regarding land acquisition for the expansion of Umroi Airport near Shillong. This development, announced by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, marks a critical step toward making Shillong a key aviation hub in the Northeast.
Optimism from the Chief Minister
Chief Minister Sangma, after a meeting with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, expressed his optimism that the groundwork for the airport’s expansion will begin soon. “We are hopeful that in the next 12 to 15 months, Umroi Airport will be equipped to handle larger commercial flights such as the Airbus A320,” he said. The expansion project aims to enable direct connectivity with metropolitan cities like Delhi, which is expected to provide a substantial boost to tourism and economic activity in Meghalaya.
Key Details of the Expansion Plan
The expansion involves extending the existing 6,000-foot runway by approximately 900 meters to the south. This extension will make it possible for the airport to accommodate larger aircraft, including Boeing 737s and Airbus A320s.
The project requires the acquisition of an additional 16 acres of land for the runway extension and another 6 acres for apron facilities. Despite the scale of the expansion, the plan has been designed to avoid cutting into nearby hillocks, minimizing environmental impact.
The estimated cost for the land acquisition and construction is approximately ₹500 crore. The state government is coordinating with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the central government to ensure the project is executed efficiently.
Timeline and Land Acquisition
Transport Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has stated that the government is currently identifying approximately 22 to 23 acres of land needed for the expansion and upgrades. He emphasized the government’s commitment to completing the project within three years, despite the procedural challenges involved.
To expedite the process, the Meghalaya High Court, in December 2024, directed the state government to acquire and transfer the required land to the Airports Authority of India within three months. This judicial directive underscores the urgency of the project and the recognition of its potential impact on the region’s connectivity and development.
Benefits for the Region
The expansion of Umroi Airport is anticipated to have a transformative effect on Meghalaya’s economy and tourism. Currently, the limited capacity of the airport restricts direct flights from major cities, making travel to Meghalaya less convenient for tourists and business travelers. The upgraded airport will not only facilitate smoother and more efficient air travel but also attract more visitors to Meghalaya’s breathtaking landscapes, vibrant culture, and unique biodiversity.
Moreover, improved air connectivity is expected to stimulate economic growth by attracting investments and boosting trade opportunities. The expanded airport could also serve as a gateway for increased regional integration, connecting Meghalaya more effectively with other northeastern states and the rest of the country.
Collaboration with Stakeholders
The success of the project relies on close collaboration between various stakeholders, including the state government, the Airports Authority of India, and the central government. With the Defence Ministry’s approval for the land acquisition and the Meghalaya government’s proactive approach, the project appears to be on a promising trajectory.
The emphasis on minimizing environmental impact, avoiding large-scale deforestation, and ensuring sustainable development highlights the government’s commitment to balancing progress with ecological preservation.
The expansion of Umroi Airport is a much-anticipated project that holds the potential to revolutionize Meghalaya’s connectivity and economic prospects. With strong support from the Defence Ministry, judicial backing, and the determined efforts of the state government, the project is poised to take off in the near future.
Once operational, the upgraded airport will not only enhance travel convenience but also position Meghalaya as a major player in the region’s aviation network, paving the way for sustained growth and development in the state.
