The Orfield Laboratories in Minnesota, home to one of the world’s quietest rooms, boasts an anechoic chamber with a background noise level of -9 decibels—quieter than the sound of air molecules moving. Visitors who enter the chamber often report an intense awareness of their own bodily functions, including breathing, swallowing, and even the movement of their muscles.

Steve Orfield, the founder of the lab, explained that most people cannot tolerate more than a few minutes in the chamber. In interviews, participants have described symptoms such as dizziness, disorientation, a sense of falling, and even hallucinations. The longest anyone has voluntarily stayed in the chamber is around 45 minutes. The reason? The absence of external sounds confuses the brain, disrupting the normal processing of sensory information.

How Sound Deprivation Affects the Brain

The effects of extreme silence can be understood through neuroscience. The human brain is designed to expect and process sound. When deprived of auditory input, the brain seeks stimulation in other ways. This can lead to a phenomenon called sensory deprivation hallucinations.

While silence can be deeply unsettling in extreme conditions, there is no strong evidence to suggest that it can cause permanent psychological damage. The effects of sound deprivation are typically temporary, dissipating once a person is exposed to normal auditory stimuli again. However, prolonged isolation combined with silence—as seen in solitary confinement or sensory deprivation experiments—can have severe psychological consequences, including anxiety, paranoia, and depression.

Studies on solitary confinement have shown that prisoners subjected to extreme isolation often develop severe mental health issues. The lack of external stimulation, including sound, contributes to their distress. However, it is important to note that the psychological effects in these cases result not only from silence but also from social isolation, lack of light, and sensory monotony.

The Therapeutic Side of Silence

Despite its unsettling effects in extreme cases, silence is not inherently harmful. In fact, controlled periods of silence can have therapeutic benefits. Meditation, mindfulness practices, and silent retreats encourage people to embrace stillness, reducing stress and improving mental clarity. The key difference is that these forms of silence are intentional and temporary, rather than enforced and absolute.

Silence, like any sensory experience, can be both beneficial and unsettling, depending on the context. While absolute silence in an anechoic chamber or a sensory deprivation tank can be disorienting and uncomfortable, it is unlikely to cause lasting psychological harm. Instead, the discomfort arises from the brain’s attempt to adapt to an unnatural lack of auditory input.

For most people, silence remains a valuable tool for relaxation and reflection. However, in extreme cases, complete sound deprivation can highlight just how much we rely on sound to navigate and understand the world around us.
