Indian Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla to Pilot Axiom-4 Mission to the International Space Station

In a historic milestone for India’s space ambitions, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Air Force has been selected to pilot the upcoming Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4) to the International Space Station (ISS). Scheduled for launch no earlier than May 2025, the mission will take off from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, marking a momentous step forward in India’s participation in international space exploration.

A New Chapter in Indian Spaceflight

Shubhanshu Shukla’s selection as the pilot of Ax-4 places him in the annals of Indian space history. He will become the first Indian astronaut to visit the ISS, and only the second Indian to travel to space, following in the footsteps of Rakesh Sharma, who flew aboard a Soviet mission in 1984. This mission is especially significant for India, as it represents a leap forward in the country’s ongoing commitment to developing indigenous human spaceflight capabilities, while also collaborating with international agencies such as NASA and Axiom Space.

Meet the Ax-4 Crew

The Axiom-4 mission will feature a multinational crew, highlighting the spirit of global cooperation in space exploration. The crew includes:

  • Peggy Whitson (Commander): A legendary former NASA astronaut and now Axiom Space’s Director of Human Spaceflight. She brings a wealth of experience, having already spent over 665 days in space.
  • Shubhanshu Shukla (Pilot): Representing the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and the Indian Air Force, Shukla will co-pilot the mission and assist in various orbital operations.
  • Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Mission Specialist): A physicist and engineer from Poland, selected through the European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut program.
  • Tibor Kapu (Mission Specialist): A Hungarian spaceflight participant representing Hungary’s growing presence in international space programs.

Together, the team will spend up to 14 days aboard the ISS, conducting scientific research, educational outreach activities, and commercial engagements in microgravity. This aligns with Axiom Space’s broader goal of enabling routine commercial missions to space and developing the first commercial space station.

Who is Shubhanshu Shukla?

Born on October 10, 1985, in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Shubhanshu Shukla showed promise from an early age. He completed his schooling at City Montessori School, a well-known institution recognized for academic excellence. Following his passion for flight, he joined the National Defence Academy (NDA) and later graduated from the Indian Air Force Academy. He also pursued a Master of Technology (M.Tech) in Aerospace Engineering at the prestigious Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore.

Shukla was commissioned into the Indian Air Force (IAF) in June 2006, entering the fighter stream. Over the years, he has amassed nearly 2,000 hours of flight experience across a range of advanced combat aircraft, including the MiG-21, MiG-29, and the Su-30 MKI. His expertise and leadership earned him a promotion to the rank of Group Captain in March 2024.

From Fighter Pilot to Astronaut

In 2019, Shukla was selected for India’s astronaut training program as part of the country’s Gaganyaan mission, ISRO’s ambitious project to send Indian astronauts to space using an indigenous spacecraft. As part of this preparation, he underwent rigorous astronaut training at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center in Russia—a world-renowned institution where several international astronauts have trained. He completed this phase of his training in 2021 and remains on ISRO’s roster for future Gaganyaan flights.

His inclusion in the Ax-4 mission illustrates both his individual excellence and the growing confidence of international space agencies in India’s spacefaring capabilities.

Significance for India and the World

The Ax-4 mission is a testament to India’s rising profile in the global space community. With ISRO’s increasing involvement in collaborative missions and its vision of long-term human spaceflight capability, Shukla’s journey symbolizes a broader strategic shift. It highlights India’s readiness to take on leadership roles in space exploration, and its ability to work closely with institutions like NASA and private space companies such as Axiom Space.

The mission also serves as a bridge to future endeavors, particularly India’s Gaganyaan mission, which aims to launch a fully crewed spacecraft into low Earth orbit in the coming years. Participation in international missions provides Indian astronauts with invaluable experience, laying the groundwork for future indigenous achievements in space.

As India prepares to celebrate this historic event in 2025, the nation watches with pride and anticipation. Shubhanshu Shukla’s mission to the ISS is more than a personal triumph—it is a national achievement, reflecting decades of commitment to science, technology, and innovation.

His journey is not just a voyage to the stars, but a symbol of how far India has come—and how far it is prepared to go.
