India Fortifies Siliguri Corridor as China Eyes Strategic Airfield in Bangladesh

In a significant escalation of regional defense preparedness, India has fortified the strategically vital Siliguri Corridor—often referred to as the “Chicken’s Neck”—amid reports that China may be involved in constructing an airfield in Bangladesh’s Lalmonirhat district. This development is being closely monitored by Indian defense authorities due to its potential implications on national security, especially the connectivity and defense of India’s northeastern states.

The Strategic Importance of the Siliguri Corridor

The Siliguri Corridor is a narrow stretch of land in West Bengal, measuring just about 22 kilometers at its narrowest point. It connects India’s mainland to its northeastern states—Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Mizoram, Manipur, and Nagaland. The corridor is flanked by Nepal to the west, Bangladesh to the south and east, and Bhutan and China to the north, making it one of the most geopolitically sensitive areas in the country.

Because of its geographical configuration, any disruption to this corridor could effectively isolate the entire northeastern region from the rest of India. For decades, Indian defense strategists have treated the Siliguri Corridor as a strategic vulnerability. However, recent developments suggest a shift in perspective, with the Indian military actively transforming the corridor into a stronghold capable of withstanding external threats.

Military Build-Up and Infrastructure Enhancement

India’s response to the growing Chinese footprint in South Asia, particularly the speculation around the construction of a Chinese-backed airfield in Bangladesh, has been swift and robust. The Indian government has accelerated military fortifications along the Siliguri Corridor with an impressive deployment of both offensive and defensive assets.

1. Deployment of Rafale Jets and MiG Aircraft

One of the most significant upgrades involves the deployment of advanced Rafale fighter jets at the Hashimara Airbase in West Bengal. These aircraft, capable of deep-strike missions and equipped with cutting-edge weaponry, enhance India’s air dominance in the region. Additionally, MiG fighter jets have been stationed to provide tactical support and rapid-response capabilities.

2. BrahMos Missile Regiment Stationed

To augment India’s strike capabilities, a regiment of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles has been deployed within the corridor. These missiles, known for their precision and speed, serve as a potent deterrent against any incursion or hostile activity.

3. Surface-to-Air Missile Defense with S-400 Systems

India has also installed the state-of-the-art S-400 Triumf air defense system in the region. This long-range surface-to-air missile system is designed to detect and destroy incoming aerial threats such as aircraft, drones, and missiles. Its presence underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding the airspace above the vulnerable corridor.

4. Enhanced Combat Readiness

The Trishakti Corps, which operates under the Eastern Command of the Indian Army and is headquartered near the corridor, has increased the frequency and intensity of its combat exercises. These include live-fire drills involving T-90 tanks, rapid troop mobilizations, and simulated battle scenarios—all aimed at ensuring operational readiness.

A Shift from Vulnerability to Fortress

These comprehensive upgrades reflect a strategic transformation of the corridor. What was once considered a soft underbelly in India’s defense architecture is now emerging as a fortified buffer zone. Senior military officials emphasize that the Chicken’s Neck should no longer be viewed as a liability. With forces stationed across West Bengal, Sikkim, and the Northeast on high alert, India is in a position to swiftly counteract any threat to the region.

This fortified approach is intended not only to deter any aggression but also to reassure the populations in the northeastern states of their security and connectivity with the rest of the country.

Concerns Over Bangladesh-China Collaboration

The primary catalyst for India’s recent surge in military preparedness has been reports of an impending airfield project in Bangladesh’s Lalmonirhat district. Located near the Siliguri Corridor, the district’s strategic location has caught the attention of Indian intelligence agencies, especially amid growing defense and infrastructure cooperation between Bangladesh and China.

Although the Bangladeshi government has not publicly confirmed Chinese military involvement, the possibility of such collaboration has alarmed New Delhi. Any Chinese-backed infrastructure project in close proximity to the corridor could potentially provide China with an intelligence or military advantage, altering the security calculus in the region.

India’s Regional Balancing Act

India’s fortification of the Siliguri Corridor also comes in the context of its broader strategy to counter China’s expanding influence in South Asia and the Indian Ocean region. From the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to increased military cooperation with Pakistan, China has been deepening its presence in areas traditionally within India’s sphere of influence. The proposed airfield in Bangladesh may be another strategic move by Beijing to encircle India through a “string of pearls” strategy.

In response, India is not only ramping up military infrastructure but also enhancing diplomatic and economic engagement with neighboring countries, including Bangladesh. The goal is to maintain regional stability while ensuring that national interests are not compromised.

The transformation of the Siliguri Corridor from a strategic chokepoint into a militarized zone with cutting-edge defense capabilities marks a significant milestone in India’s national security strategy. As China continues to assert its influence in the region through infrastructure projects and defense partnerships, India’s proactive stance in fortifying one of its most sensitive corridors is a clear message: the country is prepared to defend its territorial integrity and regional interests.

With geopolitical tensions in South Asia intensifying, the focus on the Siliguri Corridor underscores the critical intersection of geography, diplomacy, and military strategy in contemporary Indian defense policy.
