Garo Hills Takes Flight: Meghalaya Signs MoU with AAI to Operationalize Baljek Airport

In a landmark move poised to transform air connectivity in Meghalaya, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to operationalize the long-pending Baljek Airport located in Jengjal, West Garo Hills. This strategic agreement aims to finally bring the Garo Hills region onto the air map of India, fulfilling a long-standing aspiration for improved regional connectivity and infrastructure development.

A Long-Awaited Milestone for Garo Hills

Baljek Airport was inaugurated in 2008 with the vision of providing air access to the underserved western region of Meghalaya. Named after its location near Tura, the traditional heartland of the Garo community, the airport was initially designed to handle 20-seater aircraft. Despite its early promise, the facility remained non-operational for nearly two decades due to infrastructural gaps, absence of suitable aircraft, and lack of regulatory support. Now, after years of dormancy, the recent MoU signals a revival that could significantly reshape the socio-economic landscape of the Garo Hills.

Government-Aided Revival and Strategic Vision

The signing of the MoU entrusts AAI with the responsibility for the airport’s operations, maintenance, and implementation of advanced Communication, Navigation, Surveillance, and Air Traffic Management (CNS/ATM) systems. These developments will align the airport with contemporary aviation standards, allowing for the safe handling of scheduled flights.

Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who oversaw the signing of the MoU, highlighted the symbolic and strategic importance of operationalizing Baljek Airport. He emphasized that this initiative is not merely about infrastructure—it is a tribute to the vision of his late father, Purno A. Sangma, former Speaker of the Lok Sabha, who had passionately advocated for air connectivity in the region. “This is not just an airport; it is a bridge to prosperity for the people of Garo Hills,” Sangma said.

Connecting Shillong and Beyond

A key feature of the renewed project involves introducing 19-seater flights under the central government’s flagship Regional Connectivity Scheme, UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik). Initial plans propose routes connecting Shillong with Baljek, reducing travel time and enhancing access for both residents and tourists.

The government has also set in motion plans to expand the existing runway and acquire more land to accommodate larger aircraft, including the ATR-72. This expansion is crucial for ensuring that the airport can eventually support a broader network of domestic routes and increased passenger traffic.

Economic and Strategic Implications

The operationalization of Baljek Airport is expected to be a game-changer for the Garo Hills in several dimensions. Economically, improved air access will boost tourism, facilitate trade, and attract investment to the region. The Garo Hills, rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage, have long suffered from limited accessibility, which has deterred large-scale economic activities and kept development uneven.

Strategically, the airport’s location near the India-Bangladesh border enhances its importance. It could serve as a dual-use asset for civilian as well as defense logistics, particularly in times of national emergency or disaster response. This aligns with India’s broader infrastructural strategy in border and tribal areas to ensure both national security and inclusive growth.

Building Toward a Broader Vision

The move to operationalize Baljek Airport also fits within a broader vision of the Meghalaya government to enhance transportation infrastructure across the state. Recent efforts include the expansion of road networks, digital infrastructure, and the integration of the STEMS bus system in key urban areas. With the success of Umroi Airport near Shillong, the government is keen to replicate that model of sustainable and scalable growth in other regions.

In conclusion, the revival of Baljek Airport through the MoU with AAI is not just about bringing flights to a dormant runway—it represents the dawn of a new chapter for the Garo Hills. It speaks of a government willing to bridge historical neglect with forward-thinking development, a tribute to visionary leadership, and a beacon of connectivity for an entire region that has waited too long to take to the skies.
