Each year, religious ceremonies are conducted atop Shillong Peak, seeking the deity’s blessings and protection from calamities. For the Khasi, the peak is more than just a landmark; it is a living symbol of their spiritual heritage. The reverence for Lei Shyllong is so deep that the peak became synonymous with the place, and over time, the settlement below took on the same name—Shillong.

The late 19th century brought dramatic changes to the region as British colonial officials, seeking respite from the sweltering heat of the plains, shifted their civil and military headquarters from Cherrapunjee to a small settlement called Yeddo (also known as Iewduh, the site of today’s Bara Bazar market). On April 28, 1866, Colonel Henry Hopkinson officially established the settlement as the administrative center of the region and chose to rename it “Shillong.” The choice was deliberate: the name invoked both the prominent peak overlooking the valley and the rich tapestry of local legend and spirituality.
