Shillong Woman Alleges Massive Fraud by US-Based Online Firm: A Cautionary Tale of Digital Deception

In the era of digital connectivity and global job opportunities, the lure of easy money and flexible online employment has attracted millions across India. Yet, with the rise of such opportunities, there has also been a parallel surge in sophisticated scams targeting unsuspecting individuals. The recent case involving a Shillong resident, Canara Lyngdoh, and her harrowing experience with a US-based company, Look Culture Media Limited (LCML), has sent shockwaves through the local community and serves as a stark warning to job-seekers everywhere.

The Promise of Prosperity

It all began in October 2024, when Canara Lyngdoh, in search of supplemental income, came across an advertisement for an online job position offered by LCML. The company, presented as an international media firm with lucrative offers, seemed legitimate at first glance. Prospective employees were asked to pay a refundable security deposit of ₹2,250 to join as a “Group Assistant.” In return, LCML promised a daily income of ₹75, which would add up to around ₹6,600 per month—a tempting offer for many, especially during a period of rising unemployment and economic uncertainty.

According to Lyngdoh, the initial terms were simple: work from home, receive daily income, and get the deposit back after a month of service. This proposition, echoed in the testimonials and marketing material on LCML’s website and app, appeared to be the answer to the financial struggles of many in the region.

The Investment Trap Deepens

The story, however, soon took a darker turn. Not long after her initial engagement, Lyngdoh and many others were introduced to more advanced “plans” by the company. These investment schemes promised significantly higher daily returns—provided the participants deposited larger sums. The plans included:

  • A ₹6,600 investment plan, offering a daily return of ₹660.
  • A ₹20,300 plan, which promised ₹700 per day.
  • A ₹1 lakh (₹100,000) plan, with an eye-watering promise of ₹11 lakh in returns by August 2025.

The escalation of investment options was methodical and cleverly designed to build trust. Early investors received small, regular payments, which increased their confidence in the company’s legitimacy. Many, convinced of LCML’s reliability, reinvested their earnings and even contributed more money, hoping for life-changing profits.

Community Engagement and Spreading the Word

Buoyed by her apparent early success, Lyngdoh became a vocal advocate for LCML. She organized promotional events in cities such as Guwahati and Siliguri, personally encouraging others to join the platform. Certificates and digital receipts provided by LCML were shared with prospective investors as proof of legitimacy. Through word of mouth and social media, LCML’s reach expanded, with more people from Shillong and the broader Northeast region signing up.

However, beneath the surface, cracks began to emerge. Some investors experienced delays in payments, and the company’s responses to queries became increasingly vague. Still, many ignored these red flags, reassured by the documentation and testimonials provided.

The Collapse: Disappearance and Chaos

Everything changed on June 25, 2025. Without warning, LCML’s app ceased functioning, and all lines of communication with company representatives were abruptly severed. The website went offline, and prominent LCML contact persons, including one identified as Robert Garry, disappeared from all platforms.

Panic quickly spread among the network of investors. With the company gone and their investments seemingly lost, hundreds turned to Lyngdoh for answers, blaming her for their losses. What began as desperate pleas soon escalated into harassment and threats, including death threats. For Lyngdoh, the situation became a nightmare; she was forced to barricade herself in her home, fearing for her safety and the well-being of her ailing mother.

Legal Action and Plea for Justice

Realizing the gravity of the situation, Lyngdoh lodged a First Information Report (FIR) with the local police, detailing the sequence of events and the extent of the scam. She has called on other victims to unite and present a consolidated case against LCML and its operatives.

Authorities in Shillong have initiated an investigation, but the cross-border and digital nature of the fraud poses significant challenges. LCML’s web of deceit, like many online scams, appears to have been orchestrated with the explicit intent to vanish once a substantial amount of money was collected.

Lessons Learned: How to Spot and Avoid Online Scams

This incident underscores the urgent need for public awareness regarding online job offers and investment schemes. Here are some key takeaways from the LCML saga:

  • Be wary of upfront payment requirements. Legitimate employers rarely, if ever, ask for money to secure a job.
  • Excessive returns on small investments are a red flag. If an offer sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
  • Research the company thoroughly. Look for verified reviews, a verifiable office address, and check with authorities if in doubt.
  • Never trust documentation at face value. Scammers often use fake certificates and digital receipts to foster legitimacy.
  • Report suspicious activity. If you or someone you know has fallen victim to such a scam, contact local authorities immediately and gather all possible evidence.

The ordeal of Canara Lyngdoh and countless others in Shillong is a painful reminder of how digital scams can devastate lives and communities. In the pursuit of opportunity, many are lured into traps set by sophisticated fraudsters who prey on hope and trust. As investigations continue, it is hoped that justice will be served, and that this episode will serve as a powerful cautionary tale—encouraging vigilance, skepticism, and community support in the fight against online fraud.

If you or anyone you know has experienced a similar scam, do not hesitate to seek help and report the incident to the police. Together, a more informed and cautious society can resist and overcome such fraudulent schemes.
