Rs 51-Crore Skywalk Deck to Bring Stunning Views to Mawkdok Dympep Valley
Shillong, Aug 12:
In a major push to enhance Meghalaya’s tourism appeal, the government has announced the construction of a state-of-the-art skywalk deck at the picturesque Mawkdok Dympep Valley near Sohra (Cherrapunjee). The ambitious project, which comes with a price tag of Rs 51 crore, is expected to offer visitors a breathtaking vantage point over one of the region’s most spectacular landscapes.
According to officials, the project is currently in the tendering stage and work is expected to begin soon. The proposed skywalk will extend 40 metres from the edge of the valley, giving tourists an unobstructed panoramic view of the lush green hills and deep gorges. Spanning approximately 2,195 square metres on a 0.54-acre site, the pedestrian deck aims to become a signature attraction for the region.
Part of a Larger Tourism Boost
The skywalk is not an isolated development. It forms part of a wider plan to transform Sohra into a premium tourist destination. The strategy includes the construction of luxury hotels to cater to the growing number of domestic and international travellers.
Tourism in Sohra had seen a brief slowdown earlier this year following an unfortunate incident, but authorities report that visitor numbers are now climbing again. The state government is eager to capitalise on this momentum with projects that combine world-class facilities and local cultural integration.
Safety and Sustainable Tourism Measures
With increasing footfall comes the responsibility to ensure visitor safety. As part of the tourism upgrade, the administration will introduce mandatory hiring of local guides for travellers visiting key spots. This measure aims not only to protect tourists but also to provide livelihood opportunities for residents.
In addition, there are plans to install CCTV cameras at major tourism hubs in the Sohra region. Authorities believe that these steps will help maintain order, ensure a secure environment, and preserve the natural beauty of the sites.
A Leader’s Perspective
Sohra MLA Gavin Miguel Mylliem stressed that despite previous setbacks, Sohra remains “a highly sought-after destination for travellers worldwide” thanks to its unique natural wonders, cultural richness, and hospitality of the local people. He expressed confidence that the skywalk project will be a milestone in redefining the area’s tourism identity.
Once completed, the Mawkdok Dympep skywalk will offer a thrilling and eco-friendly recreational experience for visitors. Authorities anticipate it will rival some of the most famous skywalks across the globe, putting Meghalaya prominently on the international tourist map.
