OpenAI Raises ChatGPT Subscription Prices in India: What It Means for Users and the AI Landscape

OpenAI, the company behind the widely-used ChatGPT conversational AI, has quietly implemented significant pricing changes for Indian users seeking advanced features through its Plus and Pro subscription plans. Previously, Indian customers could purchase these plans using U.S. dollars, with ChatGPT Plus costing $20 and Pro going for $200 per month—amounts that translated to approximately ₹1,750 and ₹17,500, respectively. The recent decision to switch to direct pricing in Rupees, however, has resulted in a notable price hike, making access to cutting-edge AI features substantially more expensive for users across India.

The New Reality: Subscription Cost Rises by About 14%

Under the new pricing regime, both ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers in India face an increase of roughly 14% per month. This change means that the previous competitive pricing—already a concern for local entrepreneurs and developers—has now become an even steeper challenge. For many, the high cost is a barrier to broader adoption of AI tools in personal, academic, and enterprise settings.

The pricing revision comes at a time when India’s tech community is more engaged than ever in generative AI. During a visit by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman in 2024, several startup founders and software developers voiced their concerns about the affordability of paid plans, highlighting how price sensitivity in the market hinders widespread AI adoption. OpenAI was reportedly considering a less expensive “Go” plan, which was expected to launch alongside the next major model, GPT-5, but as of August 2025, this plan has yet to materialize.

Alternatives: The Push for Value-Driven AI Solutions

As OpenAI’s subscription plans become more expensive, its competitors have responded with aggressive promotions and added-value offerings. Platforms like Perplexity AI and Google Gemini are working to capture Indian users by making their premium plans either free or bundled with other popular services.

Perplexity AI, for instance, has partnered with Airtel to offer one year of Pro access to its users at no extra cost—a move likely to encourage experimentation and adoption among students and professionals. Google Gemini’s premium AI plans include not only AI chat capabilities but also perks such as increased cloud storage and complimentary access to services like YouTube Premium. These strategies are creating a dynamic market in which the value proposition for users is shifting away from pure AI capabilities towards bundled digital experiences.

ChatGPT’s Impressive Revenue Growth

Despite these pricing headwinds in India, ChatGPT continues to dominate global consumer spending in the AI space. According to app intelligence firm Appfigures, ChatGPT has accumulated over $2billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023. In the year 2025 alone, the ChatGPT mobile app generated $1.35billion in revenue, marking a 673% increase compared to the previous year. The app’s current monthly earnings nearly reach $193million, underscoring its ongoing popularity and commercial success.

What’s more, ChatGPT’s lifetime earnings exceed those of competing chatbots like Claude, Copilot, and Grok by more than 30-fold. This outsized financial performance reflects the app’s entrenched position in both consumer and professional AI markets, even as pricing increases risk slowing future growth, especially in cost-sensitive geographies.

Implications for Indian AI Users

OpenAI’s decision to raise subscription prices in India has real implications for both individual users and the broader tech ecosystem. While direct billing in Rupees makes purchasing easier and more transparent, the higher prices limit access to advanced AI features for many who could benefit from them. As a result, alternative platforms offering free or bundled premium access—like Perplexity and Google Gemini—are poised to win over users seeking a balance between cost and capability.

As the AI chatbot market continues to evolve, Indian consumers, students, and enterprises will have to weigh their options carefully, balancing the advanced functionality of premium ChatGPT plans against the increasingly attractive offers from competitors. The current landscape highlights the importance of pricing, value, and accessibility in driving AI adoption—not just in India, but globally.

In summary, the new pricing for ChatGPT Plus and Pro plans marks a pivotal shift for Indian users, challenging them to rethink their engagement with conversational AI tools and encouraging a more competitive, innovative market environment.
