Rob Halford Reflects on Singing with Black Sabbath and Teases “War Pigs” Duet with Ozzy

When fans talk about heavy metal’s defining voices, Rob Halford of Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne of Black Sabbath inevitably come up. While both legends carved their own paths in shaping the genre, there were rare and unforgettable moments when those paths crossed — and Halford stepped directly into the shoes of the Prince of Darkness.

Today, as the metal world still reels from Ozzy Osbourne’s passing in July 2025, Halford has opened up about what it was really like to sing with Black Sabbath, while also teasing a new recording that could become one of the most iconic collaborations in heavy metal history.

The Times Halford Fronted Black Sabbath

Halford first found himself in front of Black Sabbath fans back in 1992. At the time, Sabbath was touring with Ronnie James Dio, but Dio refused to play support slots for Ozzy Osbourne during his solo career dates. With Dio bowing out, Halford was called upon to step in. It was an unusual scenario — the frontman of Judas Priest stepping up to lead Sabbath on stage — but it worked. Fans immediately saw the chemistry between Halford and the rest of the band, even if it was only a temporary arrangement.

The second, and perhaps more famous, occasion came in 2004 at Ozzfest in Camden, New Jersey. Ozzy Osbourne was too ill to perform that night, and once again Halford was tapped at the very last moment to front Sabbath. He described the moment as a whirlwind — no rehearsal, little preparation, but a massive responsibility to honor the band’s legacy in front of tens of thousands of expectant fans.

For Halford, these nights weren’t just about filling in for a friend. They were moments of pure respect for Ozzy’s craft. As he recently explained, “Ozzy’s voice is pure and honest. I tend to overthink things when I sing, but with Ozzy it just flows naturally.”

A Deep Respect for Ozzy’s Style

In interviews, Halford has consistently praised Ozzy Osbourne’s vocal approach. Unlike the technical precision Halford is known for in Judas Priest, he sees Ozzy’s voice as carrying an instinctive, almost spiritual quality. “There’s something very raw and unfiltered about his delivery,” Halford said, “and that’s why people connect to it.”

This admiration makes his guest appearances with Black Sabbath all the more meaningful. Rather than trying to mimic Ozzy, Halford leaned into his own vocal power while celebrating the honesty of Sabbath’s sound.

Judas Priest on the Road in 2025

Beyond reflecting on the past, Halford also looked ahead to the future. Judas Priest is set to hit the road in fall 2025, co-headlining with Alice Cooper and supported by Corrosion of Conformity. The tour will also celebrate the 35th anniversary of Priest’s legendary 1990 album Painkiller, a record often considered one of the greatest heavy metal releases of all time.

Fans can expect a mix of classic Judas Priest anthems, deep cuts, and of course, nods to the enduring influence of Black Sabbath.

“War Pigs” – A Duet Years in the Making

Perhaps the most exciting revelation is the news that Rob Halford and Ozzy Osbourne recorded a duet of Black Sabbath’s classic anthem, “War Pigs.” The track has been described by Judas Priest drummer Scott Travis as a stunning reinterpretation of one of Sabbath’s most politically charged songs.

The recording is believed to have taken place before Ozzy’s health declined, and while there’s no confirmed release date yet, fans are already speculating that it could serve as a powerful tribute to Ozzy and Sabbath’s legacy.

Earlier this year, Judas Priest released their own cover of “War Pigs,” which was widely praised by fans and critics alike. Hearing Halford and Ozzy’s voices together on the same track would be nothing short of monumental — a passing of the torch between two of metal’s greatest frontmen.

Black Sabbath’s Final Bow

The duet news arrives in the shadow of a bittersweet moment: Black Sabbath’s farewell concert, “Back to the Beginning,” held on July 5, 2025, at Villa Park in Birmingham. The event reunited the band’s original lineup for the first time since 2005, giving fans one last chance to experience the magic of the group that invented heavy metal.

Tragically, just 17 days later, Ozzy Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, closing the final chapter on an extraordinary career. For many, the idea of a posthumous “War Pigs” release featuring Ozzy and Halford feels like the perfect tribute — one last roar from the godfathers of heavy metal.

A Legacy That Transcends Generations

For Rob Halford, the moments he shared with Black Sabbath weren’t about replacing Ozzy, Ronnie James Dio, or anyone else. They were about honoring a legacy that shaped him and millions of fans worldwide. His respect for Sabbath’s music, his friendship with Ozzy, and his continued role as one of metal’s standard-bearers make him uniquely positioned to help carry that legacy forward.

As Judas Priest gears up for their fall tour and anticipation builds for the release of the Halford–Osbourne “War Pigs” duet, the message is clear: heavy metal’s past and future are forever intertwined. The echoes of Sabbath’s riffs, Ozzy’s voice, and Halford’s soaring screams will continue to define the sound of rebellion for generations to come.
