Apple Confirms No Slowdown in Its India Expansion Plans

Apple has firmly reiterated its commitment to expanding in India, brushing aside speculation that U.S. trade tensions and tariff hikes could derail its ambitious growth strategy. With manufacturing, retail, and exports all on an upward trajectory, the tech giant is positioning India as a cornerstone of its global supply chain and consumer market.

Manufacturing Momentum: India as Apple’s New iPhone Hub

Apple assured the Indian government that it has no plans to slow down iPhone production expansion in the country. The company has pledged over $2.5 billion in fresh investments to ramp up annual iPhone output from 40 million to 60 million units, with a significant portion of this destined for exports to the United States.

The iPhone 17 series assembly has already begun in India, a landmark move that marks the first time Apple will manufacture the full lineup of U.S.-bound iPhones outside of China. This step reflects Apple’s broader “China-plus-one” diversification strategy, as the company works to reduce its heavy reliance on Chinese production amid rising geopolitical frictions.

Foxconn’s new Bengaluru facility, with an investment of nearly $2.8 billion, is now one of Apple’s largest iPhone plants outside China. Meanwhile, Tata Group—having acquired Wistron and Pegatron’s local operations—is emerging as a critical partner in Apple’s Indian manufacturing ecosystem.

Tariffs, Trade Tensions, and India’s Advantage

The U.S. recently announced steep tariffs of up to 50% on certain imports from India, effective August 27, 2025. However, iPhones produced in India remain exempt from these duties under existing trade provisions. This policy has given India a strategic edge: Apple now supplies 71% of iPhones sold in the U.S. from Indian factories, a dramatic jump from just 31% a year ago.

Even earlier tariff hikes (25%) did not significantly disrupt Apple’s India expansion, with analysts noting that manufacturing momentum continues despite global trade pressures. Apple executives have praised Indian facilities as being “among the best in the world,” signaling confidence in both infrastructure and workforce capabilities.

Retail Expansion: Bringing Apple Stores to More Indian Cities

Parallel to its manufacturing push, Apple is aggressively growing its retail footprint across India. After launching flagship outlets in Mumbai and Delhi, the company is now opening stores in southern and western India:

  • Apple Bengaluru (Phoenix Mall of Asia, Hebbal) opens on September 2, 2025.
  • Apple Pune (Koregaon Park) follows on September 4, 2025.

By the end of 2025, Apple is expected to operate at least six official retail stores across India. These stores are designed to deliver the premium Apple experience, showcasing products, offering hands-on sessions, and providing exclusive service support.

Why India Matters More Than Ever for Apple

India is not just a manufacturing base—it is also one of the fastest-growing smartphone markets in the world. With rising disposable incomes, an expanding middle class, and increasing demand for premium devices, Apple sees India as both a production hub and a major consumer market.

Key factors driving Apple’s India bet include:

  • Diversification of supply chain away from China.
  • Government incentives under India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme.
  • Strong domestic demand, with iPhones gaining steady market share in the premium segment.
  • Export potential, with India becoming a reliable source of high-value shipments to the U.S. and Europe.

Apple’s declaration of “no slowdown” in India reflects a strategic long-term vision. By simultaneously expanding its manufacturing base, strengthening its retail presence, and leveraging favorable trade conditions, Apple is embedding itself deeply into India’s economic and technological landscape.

In the years ahead, India is poised to not only be Apple’s largest global production hub but also one of its most important consumer markets—cementing the nation’s status at the heart of Apple’s future growth story.
