Nepal’s Gen Z Uprising: Social Media Ban, Violent Protests, and the Fall of K.P. Sharma Oli

Nepal is witnessing one of the most turbulent political crises in its recent history. What began as a government attempt to regulate social media has spiraled into a full-scale youth-led movement that has shaken the foundations of power in Kathmandu, claimed lives, and forced Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli to resign. The Gen Z–driven protests, fueled by frustration over corruption, poor governance, and restrictions on digital freedom, have dramatically altered the country’s political landscape in just days.

The Spark: A Ban on Digital Life

The crisis erupted when the government suddenly banned 26 social media platforms—including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Reddit, and X—for failing to register with Nepali authorities. For a country where young people rely heavily on these platforms for communication, education, activism, and business, the move was seen as a direct attack on free speech and personal liberty.

The reaction was immediate. Generation Z, already disillusioned by rising unemployment and rampant corruption, flooded the streets in protest. Within hours, peaceful demonstrations morphed into widespread unrest, with crowds demanding accountability and the reversal of the ban.

Blood on the Streets

The government’s heavy-handed response only intensified public anger. Security forces used tear gas and rubber bullets, and in some areas live ammunition, to disperse the crowds. By the second day of protests, at least 19 people had been killed and hundreds injured, turning what started as a digital rights issue into a nationwide struggle against state repression.

In Kathmandu, protesters torched government buildings, stormed into the parliament complex, and set fire to the residences of ministers. The homes of Communication Minister Rekha Sharma, Agriculture Minister Ram Nath Adhikari, and other high-ranking officials were targeted, symbolizing the public’s fury at a political elite accused of corruption and incompetence.

Government in Free Fall

The Oli government quickly began to crumble under the weight of the uprising. Facing relentless demonstrations, an indefinite curfew was imposed in Kathmandu, but the measure failed to restore order. Army helicopters were deployed to evacuate ministers and officials, and the Tribhuvan International Airport was forced to shut down, suspending all flights as mobs reached the terminal area.

Several high-profile resignations followed. The Home Minister, Health Minister, Agriculture Minister, and others stepped down, acknowledging that the government had lost legitimacy. In a dramatic turn, 21 lawmakers from the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) also resigned from Parliament in solidarity with the protesters.

The final blow came on September 9, 2025, when Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli resigned after a tense emergency cabinet meeting, admitting he could no longer withstand the pressure. His exit marked the end of yet another turbulent chapter in Nepal’s young democracy.

Oli’s Attempted Escape

Even as he stepped down, reports emerged that Oli was preparing a secret exit to Dubai, allegedly under the pretext of seeking medical treatment. Sources claimed that Himalaya Airlines had a plane on standby, with the Army ensuring his safe passage out of the capital. Rumors spread that Oli was also considering temporary asylum in Dubai, fearing retribution from enraged protesters.

Though it remains unclear whether Oli actually managed to flee, the mere suggestion underscored the magnitude of the crisis: a sitting prime minister seeking refuge abroad as his government collapsed around him.

A Generation’s Revolt

At the heart of the turmoil is Nepal’s Generation Z—digitally savvy, politically aware, and increasingly unwilling to tolerate corruption, authoritarianism, or limitations on free expression. For years, young Nepalis have voiced frustration over economic stagnation, lack of opportunities, and the entrenchment of old political elites.

The social media ban became the tipping point, transforming simmering discontent into an unstoppable revolt. For many youths, the crackdown was not just about internet access but about their right to shape Nepal’s future without interference from corrupt leaders.

International and Regional Concerns

Nepal’s crisis has caught the attention of its neighbors and the wider international community. India, China, and Western governments have expressed concern over the escalating violence and instability in the Himalayan nation. With Nepal being a crucial buffer state between India and China, prolonged unrest raises fears of geopolitical maneuvering and potential foreign intervention.

What Happens Next

With Oli’s resignation, Nepal faces a political vacuum. Questions loom over who will lead the government, how quickly order can be restored, and whether Gen Z protesters will accept incremental reforms or continue pushing for systemic change.

The lifting of the social media ban may have removed the immediate trigger, but the protests revealed a deeper reality: Nepal’s youth no longer trust traditional leaders. They are demanding clean governance, transparency, and respect for fundamental freedoms.

For Nepal’s political class, the message is clear—ignore the next generation at your peril.

The 2025 Gen Z protests in Nepal will be remembered as a watershed moment, a youth-led revolt that toppled a sitting prime minister and reshaped the country’s political discourse. What began as outrage over a digital shutdown has become a broader fight for dignity, opportunity, and democratic accountability.

As Kathmandu’s streets remain tense and uncertain, one truth shines through: Nepal’s young people are no longer passive observers. They are the driving force of change, and the nation’s future will depend on whether its leaders can finally listen.
