Colonel Mitali Madhumita: The First Woman Officer to Receive Sena Medal for Gallantry

Colonel Mitali Madhumita stands as a shining example of courage, leadership, and resilience in the Indian Army. An officer from the Army Education Corps, she made history by becoming one of the first women to receive the Sena Medal for Gallantry for her extraordinary bravery during a deadly terrorist attack in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Heroism in the 2010 Kabul Attack

On 26 February 2010, Major Mitali Madhumita was serving in Kabul as the Project Director of the Indian English Language Training Team for Afghan National Army personnel. A major terrorist assault targeted Indian guest houses in the diplomatic area, involving a car bomb, gunfire, grenades, and a suicide bomber. The attack claimed around 19 lives, including seven Indians.

Despite belonging to a non-combat arm and being unarmed, Major Madhumita rushed through dangerous streets amid ongoing explosions and crossfire to reach the site. She fearlessly entered the rubble-strewn buildings and helped rescue injured Indian and foreign personnel trapped in the debris. Her quick thinking and bravery under extreme risk saved multiple lives. For this act of gallantry, she was awarded the Sena Medal (Gallantry) in 2011.

Early Life and Military Journey

Born in 1976 in Rourkela, Odisha, Mitali Madhumita comes from a family with deep military roots—her grandfather and father both served in the Army. She excelled in academics, completing a BA in English Honours and an MA in Linguistics & Literature. As an active NCC cadet, she won awards in aero-modelling and glider flying.

She was commissioned into the Indian Army in 2000 as a Lieutenant on Short Service Commission after clearing the Combined Defence Services (CDS) examination and training at the Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai. Her career included instructional roles, including at the Defence Services Staff College, and postings in sensitive areas such as Jammu & Kashmir and India’s Northeast. Her assignment in Kabul came in 2009–2011.

Clarifying the “First Woman” Milestone

While Colonel Madhumita is widely celebrated as the first woman officer to receive the Sena Medal for Gallantry, records indicate that Capt (Dr) C.R. Leena of the Army Medical Corps had received the award earlier in 1995 for her actions in Jammu & Kashmir. Colonel Madhumita is nevertheless recognised as a prominent milestone figure, particularly for demonstrating gallantry in an overseas operational environment.

Perseverance and Continued Service

After her short service term, Colonel Madhumita fought a significant legal battle for Permanent Commission. With rulings in her favour from the Armed Forces Tribunal and eventually the Supreme Court in 2016, she continued her service. She has since been promoted to the rank of Colonel.

Currently, she serves as Principal of Sainik School, Ambikapur, in Chhattisgarh, where she mentors young cadets and shapes the future leaders of the nation. She has also appeared on television shows such as Kaun Banega Crorepati, using her platform to inspire others.

Colonel Mitali Madhumita’s journey—from academic excellence and courageous action under fire to overcoming institutional challenges—embodies the highest ideals of service, determination, and leadership. Her story continues to motivate countless women and men in uniform and beyond, proving that bravery knows no gender.
