The American Takeover of English Football: From Wrexham to the Premier League Giants

Over the past two decades, English football has been undergoing a quiet but profound transformation. What once seemed unthinkable—foreign, especially American, ownership of the most cherished clubs in the Premier League and beyond—has now become the norm. As of 2025, more than half of England’s top-flight teams are majority-owned by American investors, with a growing footprint across the lower leagues as well. From Hollywood stars in Wales to billionaire investment funds at Manchester United and Liverpool, the landscape of the game is being reshaped in ways that highlight both opportunity and controversy.

A Wave of U.S. Ownership

The shift began in earnest in the early 2000s when the Glazer family acquired Manchester United. Since then, U.S. ownership has accelerated, with household names and global investment firms entering the fray. By 2025, 11 of the 20 Premier League clubs are primarily in American hands.

But this trend is not confined to the top tier. In the English Football League, the story is the same. Wrexham, co-owned by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, has become the poster child for the new wave of celebrity-led investment. Birmingham City, Swansea City, and other historic clubs now feature American money behind their operations. Even clubs not wholly American-owned often include U.S. minority stakes, such as Manchester City’s American private equity partners.

Why English Football Attracts American Investors

Several factors explain why Americans are increasingly drawn to English football.

  1. Appreciating Assets
Football clubs are seen as long-term investments whose values steadily increase, particularly given the global brand recognition of Premier League sides. A club like Manchester United, for example, has grown into a multi-billion-dollar enterprise, rewarding the Glazers handsomely despite fan backlash.
  2. Football as Entertainment
Investors view football not just as a sport, but as a media and entertainment product. With worldwide television rights and the storytelling potential of clubs steeped in history, English football is uniquely positioned to offer narratives that can be monetized through documentaries, merchandising, and global fan engagement.
  3. The “Wrexham Effect”
Reynolds and McElhenney’s success in revitalizing Wrexham—both on the pitch and as a global brand—has demonstrated the power of celebrity and storytelling. Their documentary series drew millions of fans worldwide, creating a halo effect for other American investors who now see English clubs as media platforms as much as football institutions.
  4. Commercial Potential
Beyond ticket sales, English clubs present opportunities in stadium redevelopment, real estate, digital platforms, and sponsorship deals. Investors see untapped streams of revenue waiting to be unlocked.

What American Owners Are Changing

While not all American owners share the same philosophy, certain trends are clear:

  • Light Touch on Football Decisions
Many U.S. investors prefer to leave football operations to sporting directors and managers, instead focusing on branding, media, and infrastructure. At Wrexham, Reynolds and McElhenney have made clear that they defer to the professionals when it comes to tactical decisions.
  • Modernization of Facilities
Upgrades to stadiums and training grounds are often prioritized, with owners looking to maximize both player performance and commercial opportunities.
  • Data and Analytics
Drawing from American sports culture, analytics and sports science are increasingly emphasized in recruitment and performance management.
  • Contract Strategies
Some clubs now offer unusually long contracts, locking in talent and attempting to balance sporting ambition with financial stability.

Fan Resistance and Lingering Tensions

Despite the capital and modernization U.S. owners bring, many fans remain wary. Manchester United supporters, for instance, have spent years protesting against the Glazers, objecting to the debt-driven takeover model and the prioritization of profits over tradition.

There is also widespread skepticism about whether American investors will attempt to import elements of U.S. sports culture—such as closed leagues, no relegation, or salary caps—into English football. While there has been little evidence of a coordinated push in this direction, memories of the failed 2021 European Super League project remain fresh.

Premier League governance also acts as a safeguard. Major changes require approval from 14 of the 20 clubs, making it difficult for any bloc of American owners to unilaterally impose structural changes.

The Future of U.S. Influence in English Football

With clubs like Wrexham, Birmingham, and Swansea eyeing promotion, the share of American-owned clubs in the Premier League could rise even higher in the coming years. Yet, the traditions of English football—deeply rooted in community, history, and fan identity—remain resilient.

What seems most likely is a continued blending of American business practices with English football culture. Owners will push for commercial expansion, digital media innovation, and infrastructure development, while fans will remain the guardians of football’s heritage, pushing back against changes that threaten the essence of the sport.

The American takeover of English football is not a monolithic story of control but rather a patchwork of approaches, ambitions, and philosophies. For some, it represents the commercialization of the game at the expense of its soul. For others, it is a much-needed injection of resources, modernity, and global visibility.

Whether this trend ultimately strengthens or undermines the fabric of English football will depend on how well the balance is struck between financial growth and the preservation of football’s traditions. One thing, however, is certain: American influence is no longer at the fringes—it is now at the very heart of the English game.
