NHAI’S SIMPLIFIED ‘KNOW YOUR VEHICLE (KYV)’ FOR FASTAG: WHAT IT MEANS, WHY IT WAS DONE, AND HOW IT WILL IMPACT YOU
India’s highways today run on FASTag. When the system began, it was just a convenient digital pass for paying tolls with zero cash and zero delays. But as the network expanded and physical cash booths started disappearing, the system began to face its most serious issue — misuse.
There were cases where one tag would be used on multiple vehicles, tags would be lent out or resold, tags would be peeled off and stuck on other vehicles, and sometimes, small vehicle category tags were used on bigger vehicles to avoid paying correct toll fee.
To clean this up, NHAI (National Highways Authority of India) introduced a new policy framework called Know Your Vehicle (KYV). Now, this policy is undergoing a critical simplification to make life easier for vehicle owners, while still keeping the FASTag ecosystem transparent and efficient.

WHY KYV WAS INTRODUCED
The purpose of KYV is simple — authenticate that the FASTag is attached to the correct vehicle.
Earlier, banks and agencies noticed misuses:
- One tag being used for multiple vehicles
- Old tags removed from scrapped vehicles and reused
- Wrong category tags used to cheat toll category pricing
- Fake or duplicate tags used in grey markets
When tolling is digital, misuse is easier if identity and vehicle linkage are weak. So KYV ensures one simple concept: one vehicle = one tag.
NHAI has also mandated that KYV must be renewed once every three years to maintain system purity.
WHAT HAS BEEN SIMPLIFIED NOW
The earlier KYV format required multiple images submitted for verification. There were complaints that the process was cumbersome and time-consuming.
The revised process has been dramatically simplified:
For cars, jeeps, vans — only one image is needed
- A single front photo showing the number plate AND the FASTag sticker fixed on the windshield.
No side-angle photos needed anymore.
AUTOMATIC DETAILS FETCH FROM VAHAN
The new KYV portal now has the ability to automatically source your vehicle’s details from the national VAHAN database.
You enter three basic identifiers:
- Vehicle number
- Chassis number
- Mobile number
After entering these, the system will auto-fetch the RC details — making it faster and reducing the chance of mismatch or manual typing errors.
WHAT IF YOU HAVE MULTIPLE VEHICLES ON ONE NUMBER?
Many families have more than one vehicle linked to one mobile number. The system now allows the user to select the specific vehicle for which KYV is being done.
Earlier many people were confused why the wrong vehicle details were showing — that is now fixed.
WHAT HAPPENS TO OLD FASTAG WITHOUT KYV?
Old FASTags (issued before the KYV ruling) will not be instantly disabled.
The only time an issue can occur is:
- if the tag is loose or detached
- if misuse is reported or detected
- if the RC details don’t match real usage
Banks have also been instructed to help customers complete KYV — not simply deactivate.
WHY THIS MATTERS FOR EVERY FASTAG USER
FASTag is now essential for highway driving. There is no going back to the old cash booth world.
If your tag is not KYV verified:
- you may face blocks in future renewals
- you may have to pay full toll fee manually
- you may face pending activation delays when switching vehicles
- eventually, non-KYV tags could be restricted
This is exactly like KYC for bank accounts — necessary for system integrity.
WHAT TO DO RIGHT NOW
- Get a single clear front photo of your vehicle with the tag visible.
- Log in to your FASTag issuing bank’s portal.
- Do KYV once, and then relax for three years.
