Tennis star Sania Mirza, a name synonymous with Indian sporting excellence, has transitioned from the high-octane life on the global tennis circuit to a more structured, family-focused existence in Dubai. In a recent intimate interview, the legend offered a rare glimpse into her stunning Dubai residence, sharing her priorities as a mother, entrepreneur, and global icon.
The Heart of Home: Family and Comfort
Sania’s decision to base herself in Dubai was driven by practicality and proximity. Her home, located conveniently near a mall, was primarily chosen because her son, Izhaan, attends a school very close by. This focus on family dictates her daily rhythm.
Her day starts early, around 6:45 or 7:00 AM, with the indispensable “school drop-off duty.” This is followed by a gym session, carving out time for her own fitness before managing her business ventures, which include brand events and her burgeoning interest in pickleball. The afternoon brings her main priority: picking up Izhaan at 3:20 PM, after which her time is dedicated to him.
The architecture of her life—and her home—revolves around comfort, not formality. She identifies the informal TV/Lounge area as the heart of the house and her favorite spot. It’s where she, Izhaan, and family members spend the most time, often opting to eat dinner and watch movies on the sofa rather than at the formal dining table. The space is unapologetically designed for “lazing around.”
Lifestyle: The Comfort of Being a Homebody
Despite her global fame, Sania describes herself as a complete “homebody.” She rarely goes out, often convincing her celebrity friends to come to her instead. Her social life with close friends, including director Farah Khan and entrepreneur Ananya Birla, is refreshingly simple and avoids the typical glitz expected of public figures. Their evenings are low-key, centered around conversation, sharing, and food.
“Our dinner starts at like 7:30 PM, which is very abnormal,” she jokes, explaining that her circle prioritizes sleep and early nights. Their gatherings are often fueled by simple home-cooked Indian meals, from dosas to Farh Khan’s famous biryani or yakni pulao.
When she does venture out, she prefers breakfast and brunches. Her go-to for lunch is the acclaimed Zuma, and she has a special Sunday ritual with her son: heading to IHOP for breakfast after his football match. Her personal style is also rooted in simplicity, defining it as “super casual” and comfortable—often a simple pair of jeans.
Upholding the Legacy: The SARA Tennis Academy
Though her competitive career is over, Sania remains deeply connected to the sport through the SARA Tennis Academy in Dubai, a center that trains over 100 to 150 children and adults.
She admits to missing the emotional intensity of competition: “I think the thing I miss the most is the feeling of winning, the feeling of walking onto the biggest sports in the world. I will never be able to replicate that very feeling.”
However, her approach to her son’s budding interest in tennis is balanced. She consciously keeps her coaching role separate from her mother role, ensuring Izhaan has his own skillful coaches at the academy. She only steps in to help “whenever he asks me for a question,” stating emphatically that she doesn’t “want to be a typical tennis parent.”
On Pressure: A Privilege
Reflecting on her trailblazing career, Sania recalled the immense pressure of rising to the top as a female athlete from a country where the infrastructure for professional tennis was minimal.
She deals with pressure by adopting the philosophy of Billie Jean King: “Pressure is a privilege.” Her coping mechanism is grounded and pragmatic: to always think of the worst that can happen. “I can lose this tennis match. Is it going to hurt? Probably yes. But will I be over it? Maybe over a sleep.” She explains that this mindset allows her to wake up the next day, work hard, and “come back stronger.”
From embracing her role as the Dubai Sports Ambassador to enjoying her new favorite car, a Boxster, Sania Mirza’s life in Dubai is a testament to finding balance—a perfect ace of home life, business, and sporting legacy.
