Suicide or Murder? The Unanswered Questions Surrounding the Death of the Maldivian Model with the Blue Eyes

The death of a beautiful, ambitious young woman in a foreign dormitory is a tragedy. But when the official ruling is contradicted by forensic evidence and dismissed by the victim’s own family, the tragedy curdles into a haunting mystery. Such is the case of Raudha Athif, the Maldivian model and medical student whose life was cut short in Bangladesh, sparking an international investigation into whether her death was a suicide or a carefully orchestrated murder.
Raudha Athif: The Girl with the Blue Eyes
At 21, Raudha Athif was a woman of dazzling promise. To the world, she was “The Maldivian girl with the blue eyes,” a striking model whose photos, particularly those showcasing her piercing blue gaze, had gone viral. Her fame culminated in a coveted Vogue magazine cover, launching her onto the global stage.
Yet, to her family, she was “router atif,” a caring young woman who was far more committed to her studies than to photoshoots. Her true ambition was to be a doctor. She was a second-year medical student at Islami Bank Medical College in Rajshahi, Bangladesh, studying on a scholarship with plans to transfer to Australia to finish her degree.
Raudha’s vibrant lifestyle, however, contrasted sharply with the conservative environment of Rajshahi. As a Muslim model, she had taken precautions, purchasing clothes that fit the strict dress code. Still, her Vogue cover elicited a backlash, with some critics labeling her modeling as “un-Islamic”. This cultural friction, according to lawyer Rabia Sadiq, may have placed her in danger.
The Dorm Room Discovery and the Family’s Outcry
On March 29th, 2017, Raudha was found dead in her college dorm room. A university friend claimed to have peered through a gap in the doors and saw Raudha hanging from a ceiling fan by a scarf. The door was allegedly broken down to retrieve her. The police quickly ruled the death a suicide.
However, her father, Dr. Mohammed Atef, a doctor himself with a background in forensic medicine, refused to accept this conclusion. “I couldn’t believe that she would hang herself or she would kill herself,” he stated. He believes the truth is a cover-up and that his daughter was murdered. Driven by this conviction, he enlisted the help of international human rights lawyer Rabia Sadiq to find justice.
The Evidence: Cracks in the Suicide Narrative
The core of the investigation lies in a series of inconsistencies at the crime scene and on Raudha’s body that strongly suggest foul play.
The Ligature Mark Discrepancy
The official cause of death was hanging by a cotton scarf. Yet, forensic analysis suggests otherwise.

  • Dr. Mohammed Atef points out that the bruising on her neck was too well-defined and parallel to have been caused by a flimsy cotton scarf. He suggests the mark looked like one caused by a “hard material like a belt”.
  • Australian forensic pathologist Professor Jody Flu, after reviewing the crime scene photos, agreed that the well-defined, straight upper and lower border of the ligature mark was not consistent with the scarf. Furthermore, he observed an “unusual area… quite reminiscent of a buckle or something similar”.
    Signs of Strangulation
More alarmingly, Dr. Atef observed fingerprint marks on Raudha’s neck. Both he and lawyer Rabia Sadiq argued that these bruises are conclusive evidence that she was strangled before or during the act, definitively ruling out suicide.
The Intact Door and the Undamaged Fan
The physical evidence within the room also contradicted the witness accounts:
  • The Door: The official story claimed the door to Raudha’s room had to be “broken down” to gain entry. Yet, when Dr. Atef returned to the room, he showed that the door was “clearly intact” with two strong locks, undamaged from the outside. “Someone is lying,” he concluded.
  • The Ceiling Fan: Raudha, who weighed 55 kilos, was allegedly hanging from the ceiling fan. However, Dr. Atef demonstrated that even gently pulling on the same model of fan causes it to bend and strain. He questioned whether the fan could have supported the body without being pulled down.
  • A Normal Morning: Signs of a struggle or distress were oddly juxtaposed with a normal routine. On a table sat a cup of tea, and Raudha had been cooking a curry for lunch.
The sum of the evidence—the physical marks pointing to murder, the contradictory witness statements, and the signs of a cover-up—has left Raudha’s father consumed by his mission: “I am searching for the truth. I want to know the truth behind my daughter. Who killed her and why”.
The mystery of Raudha Athif’s death continues, fueled by the conviction that someone is trying to conceal the truth behind the heartbreaking fate of the girl with the blue eyes. The ongoing investigation is set to probe the hacking of Raudha’s social media and whether jealousy may have played a part, with her best friend emerging as a person of interest.
