Umsning, Ri Bhoi: In a determined effort to combat persistent traffic congestion and reduce the incidence of road accidents, the Ri Bhoi District Police recently conducted a focused Behavioral Awareness Drive on Correct Lane Use along the Umsning By-pass stretch of National Highway 6 (NH-6).
The initiative, which forms a critical part of the district’s sustained road safety campaign, targeted a common and dangerous driving habit: slow-moving vehicles obstructing the fast lane.

The drive was led by Senior Superintendent of Police, Vivekanand Singh Rathore, and Additional Superintendent of Police, Orville Isaac Massar. The primary goal was to educate drivers, particularly those operating heavy goods vehicles (trucks), on the necessity of maintaining proper lane discipline.
Police officials observed that a significant cause of slowdowns, aggressive overtaking, and resulting accidents was the tendency of trucks and other slow-moving traffic to occupy the right lane (the overtaking or fast lane), forcing faster vehicles to take unnecessary risks.
“The constant occupation of the right lane by slow vehicles causes frustration and aggressive driving, which directly leads to serious accidents,” an official stated during the demonstration.
🤝 Practical Demonstration and Engagement
Unlike standard enforcement actions, the Umsning drive focused heavily on practical education and engagement. The police executed a special awareness program that included a live, on-road demonstration.
Drivers, including both truck and private car operators, were asked to demonstrate their usual driving patterns and then practice corrected, safer lane usage. They were guided through:
- Driving strictly on the left lane for regular travel.
- Using the right lane only for overtaking.
- Driving in a zigzag pattern to highlight the hazards created by incorrect lane switching.
This hands-on approach allowed drivers to provide real-time feedback and internalize the safety benefits of proper lane discipline, ensuring the message was practical and sticky.

This behavioral drive is a continuation of the Ri Bhoi Police’s successful efforts to enhance road safety across the district. Previous initiatives, such as the rigorous enforcement against illegal truck parking along the Byrnihat–Jorabat stretch, have already yielded positive results in reducing congestion and enhancing traffic flow.
The district police are utilizing a dual strategy of strict enforcement—including regular vehicle checks and e-Challan drives—and consistent education. According to official reports, this approach has contributed to a noticeable reduction in road accidents throughout Ri Bhoi, establishing a safer environment for commuters on the vital NH-6 corridor.
The police have pledged to continue these awareness and enforcement programs to ensure that the positive behavioral changes become permanent habits among the driving public.
